I'd really like info on this as well.. Anyone use it on Cingular side??

I'd really like to put my Nextel in the blender at home. I'm really starting to hate Nextel. I thought maybe by the grace of god since Sprint bought them they would better the service. They've told me they would not be repairing a local tower or impoving it any time soon.. so I'm to the point of converting my employees to another service.

Cant you just get a new sim card from the new provider, or is that only possible with GSM?.

GSM only.  To add complexity to that, most GSM providers sim-lock their phones so that you can't easilly switch providers without getting a new phone.  Eg, even though T-Mobile and Cingular use the same frequencies, you can't put a Cingular SIM into a locked T-Mobile phone.

They lock them here to so you can only put in a simcard from the same provider. They only do that if you buy the phone with a 12 month subscribtion _and_ accept thier discount on the phone.

Some websites or shops can unlock your phone tho... for a small fee ofcourse.

Im really wondering if I should go for the Palm or one of the other smartphone/PDA clones with windows. The windows phones are usually abit more advanced with wifi etc, but the thought of having windows in my phone really sounds awful.

I have really been wainting for the SE P990i (dunno if you will get it over there) but its been delayed for ages.

In my POV, don't buy it. My ex boss had one (cingular) and thing was droping calls right and left. He had to go thru 5 of them before he received one that was working. One of our customer had one also (Verizon), and he returned it becuase he was loosing all his appointments from time to time.

I personaly have the Pocket PC (Verizon), windows based.

On the function side, I like it better than the Treo, especially on the appointments/callendar. I can set way more options on my appointment and contact lists than the treo.

I also have Word, and Excell. Excell is a great tool because I have all my airplanes Weight&Ballance sheets on it, and can do it "on the spot in no time".
Phone also has the WMP for my MP3s, with full screen video capability. And handwriting recognition. I personaly never used the sliding keyboard.

As far as browsing the web, you have 3 modes of display, the one I use can put the format of the page to the screen and make pages readable and easy to navigate.

The drawback of this Pocket PC is his battery life. It's a power guzzler. Don't expect more than 3h of continous talk. So I end up driving around on a car charger. The remedy is to buy a big battery like a 3k+ ma that will bring you 8h of straight talk time. The Treo, having less gadgets, will give u 4h of staright talk time.

My version of the pocket PC doesn't have a hard drive, which means that when u run out of battery for too long, your datas are errased! I go around that by saving all my datas on my 2G SD cards, just in case.

I also have an anoying bug where the phone line locks up between calls, like once / twice a week, and I have to reset the line, which is just a click of a button.

It's my understanding that the NEW Pocket PC has a hard drive and that the bugs and inconvenience of mine have been worked out. Plus it's a bit smaller and easy to carry around.

Ive been looking into a phone that looks similar to the one on the botom Frenchy.

I belive "yours" too is made by HTC. They make pretty much all the windows phones and sells them to providers and other companies that slap their names and software in them.

Here is the one im looking at

Looks similar, Audiovox is doing those 6600 (mine) and 6700 (new). On the new one, the black dot is a joystick, pretty handy to navigate through pages.

Nilson - I have the phone you show the pic of - but mine is with T-Mobile (they call it the MDA Vario).  I absolutely love it. It works seamlessly with my outlook contacts, has WiFi which works fine and (although I haven't loaded it yet ) will run my TomTom GPS for my in car nav.  Good phone too and ok camera for fun snapshots to MMS. I also have the one before that (the I-Mate Jam) which was also good - main difference is the new one runs Windows Mobile 5 where-as the old one ran Mobile 2003 SE - WM5 seems more stable than 2003Se at the moment ( I am running both side by side to compare for the last 3 months) .   For me the size benefit is the key thing - it is not XDA size it is phone size - no bigger than my old Nokia 6600 - top shirt pocket easy.

I have a 2gig Mini SD in it which is plenty.

Yup. the MBA is the same phone:)

No shops near here have it in stock so i cant really get to touch and feel it. I have to order one from the net, or drive a long way to see one.

Do you use it often, and does it still feel as tight and well put together as when you fist got it? Im worried that after some use the slide-out keyboard can start to get some slack.

Main gripe i have with all of them (including the Palm) is that unlike Nokia and SE smartphones none of them have radio. With my current phone i thought that i would use MP3 the most, but it turns out that i actually listen more to radio.

Hey Sparks..

Does that MDA work as a modem for my laptop via bluetooth or USB?

Fortunately, you can get the unlock code from T-Mobile to allow your phone to be used with any GSM provider.  That was as of a year ago, anyhow, and you just had to have your phone for 60 days.  Hell, they'd even request the code from your previous provider for your if you asked, though with no guarantee that they could get it.  Not sure if Cingular does the same or not.
