Did Opie Blow It?
« on: May 19, 2006, 05:29:55 PM »
Critics at the 59th Cannes Film Festival slammed the newly released movie "The Da Vinci Code."  It was variously described as plodding and boring.

New York media critics were equally harsh in their assessments of the movie.  One described Tom Hank's performance as "wooden."

In addition, an albino rights group blasted Ron Howard for portraying the most evil character of the film as an albino.

I take it that some of you guys will be watching it this weekend.  How about posting your assessments of it here...whether or not you agree with what the critics have said.

I think Ron Howard is a very good film maker.  Maybe great.  If the film is not as good as folks hoped it would be, he'll try again and maybe do better.

Though Apollo 13 and The Missing were very good.

After all the Discovery Channel shows and all the hype and with the book having been read by almost everyone by now, is there anyone who doesn't already know what the "mind-boggling twist" is? A movie like this needs to have a certain amount of anonymity, it's not Ron Howard's fault; he's one of the more capable director's there is. Certainly one of my top 20. That said, not sure if I'll try to catch this at the theater or not.

Did you make that part up? Silas was an albino in the book, why should he be a pigmented person in the movie? I'm sure the movie does not get into character development like the book does, but he being an albino is part of why his character is the way he is.

I think you can name more movies that were the highest grossers ever that were slammed by critics (Star Wars, Titanic, yada yada)

Name the ones they liked...and they didnt make a whole lot (Brokeback Mountain, etc etc)

It's a movie. It's supposed to be entertainment. It is not a big dealto be concerned about.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Midnight,

Nope...didn't make that up...heard it on the news this morning.  I suppose the albino group thought Howard should have used a little director's license to change the script, and portray him as a non-albino.

Hangtime,

Not trying to inflame your angst...just opening a thread where those who see the film can compare impressions.

I read the book and when I was done I didn't thnk it was that great, but however that it would make a good movie.
When I heard of Howard, Hanks, Tatou and the lot, I thought "WOW", nice team. So, I'm going to see it!
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Ron Howard is the best movie guy bar none.  I'll see the movie just because he directed it.
