P-38L vs. Spitfire XVI on the deck
« on: May 22, 2006, 07:36:38 PM »
This is a film I made sometime after the 2.07 update that introduced the full flaps increased drag bug in the Lightning.  I've heard complaints that other than the bug, the flight model of the P-38 has been porked.  I disagree with that.  Other than the bug with the increased drag at full flaps, the P-38 flies like it did prior to the patch.  Some consider the bug with the flaps to be a game breaker for them and I again disagree with that notion.  Maybe if you were the type that thinks turn fighting is being at full flaps in a Luftberry with the enemy then I guess it would be a game breaker for that pilot but then it's not a smart way to fly the Lightning.

The bug is a pisser for sure but it's a hinderance best and definitely not a game breaker.

In the film I posted, I'm being chased on the deck by Amalfi in a Spitfire XVI.  He's looking for blood since I had spent the last 15-20 minutes or so loitering off the coast near his base fighting him and another guy in a P-51D.  The film starts towards the end of the run and at the beginning shows me downing the Spitfire XVI and the P-51D.  I had to bug out after those two kills due to lack of fuel with Amalfi hot on my tail probably hoping to get me as I was landing.  I waited until he got close enough and then turned to engage.  If you can see the dials in the film, you'll see where I engage full flaps only for a second or two in order to get the angle I needed then immediately rectract them afterwards.  You can also see where the fight on the deck takes place mostly at medium to low speeds, quite often in the 100mph-150mph area.  The Lightning handled fine at all times at that speed zone.  But then as all things YMMV.

The only reason I had started the film was to find out later on who these guys were because they'd climb up to 8k or so and then dive to the deck for their field acks whenever I would engage.  But it did end up showing a good kill on the Spitfire on the deck.

I don't think the 38 is porked OTHER than the  last notch of flaps. I like to rope people, or spiral turn them till they stall, or turn under me then I use the accelaration to jump into the saddle....due to my aiming troubles I must do this a number of time to get the kill :)

I'll take my 38 all the way down in speed and need all the flaps to hold that baby up there. This is the only trouble I see with it, I'm VERY used to using the very low speed handleing of the 38, and now with the porked flap, I just drop like a rock from there  :(

Guess I'll just have to fly the spit 16 like everyone else :O

I have used these porked flaps for my advantage in the vert. When going up and i know i need a certain amount of speed to completely fall over i go even less deploy all of the flaps even the dive ones in the 38L and full elevator up and pretty much swing over at very low speed and come down on a 6 or high 12 quarter shot. But I never do this in the MA to scared to try with 30 Spit16's chasing me usually when im in a 38 looking for an easy kill.:D

That bug isn't a killer until you deploy full flaps at 130kts on final, then it will give you a real WTF moment.

I use that 5th notch flap position only to slow down FAST! After thats done i RETRACT to the 4th notch. Aircraft handles much better, much easier landing.........runways are more than long enough. If i am landing on a cv then I extend the last notch after touch down. It can still act like a drag chute.....:)

I’ll give you credit AKAK, I couldn’t fly the P38 for luck nor money.

Hi Ack-Ack,

Those guys were both chasing you home, you turned to fight the Spit, but the other guy was boring in with a P-51, you got the kill on the Spit before the P-51 arrived and then the film ended... So I'm curious what happened next, did you land those kills? Did the P-51 get you? Did he run away once his buddy died... what did happen? Why stop filming before the end?

Nice kill streak by the way...

I turned the film off after the I killed the Spitfire XVI because I had only turned it on to see who the Spitfire and Mustang pilots were.

I did manage to land the 12 kills but I had to dead stick land at the VH that was on the neaby island.  As I was coasting up to one of the hangers, flack started to go off and the last thing I saw was this P-51D on fire plunging into one of the hangers giving me the 12th kill (proxy).
