I Gotta Move

Quote
Demographers told Northwest trustees last night that, based on growth projections, by the fall of 2015 Northwest ISD will need to add 17 new elementary schools, four new middle schools and two new high schools.
That's 20 miles from me in north Texas. When I was a kid they had less than 1000 students and so did we. They expect our county to double in population in less than 10 years.

I grew up in the country where it was peaceful and quiet. You could leave the keys in the car, sleep with the front door and windows wide open and not have to worry. My closest neighbor was over a mile away. Now there are 100's of people living within a mile of me.

I'm thinking of busting up whats left of my grandfathers ranch into lots, taking the money and finding me a couple hundred acres in the middle of nowhere. My sister and her family are thinking of doing the same thing with their place. But, where IS the middle of nowhere nowadays? Montana and Wyoming are full of Hollywierd types and Alaska is just too **** cold.

I'm thinking about Mexico. Anyone have any experience with living there and what all is involved? I'm also open to suggestions on alternate locations.

I hear Mexico is kinda empty lately.

SOB, I've considered that. I used to haul out of Center, Oregon and it was nice country.

Central and Northern Nevada is very nowhere.

It's the most unpopulated place I've ever been to.

Goodluck RPM.  You can take the man outta Texas, but you can't take Texas outta the man.

I almost moved to Arizona last winter.  I thank God every morning that I didn't.

Yeah, I know Diablo. I really hate the thought of selling and moving from my family home. But, my ancestors did just that more than once.

Thought about out by Snyder or Seymore but the area there is so desolate. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be in the middle of the desert or Gilligan's Island.

The only reason I'm considering Mexico is retirement value. I can make my nestegg go much farther there and there is some very pretty countryside. I'm just not sure of all the legal mumbo jumbo that's involved for an American to live there. Of course there are still security concerns there as well.

RPM,

I wouldn't consider buying in Mexico. The emmigration situation would not be as easy as you would think. If you MUST go to Mexico consider a long term lease rather than buying. If you think you can buy property within 50 kilometers of the coast, forget it. Mexican law prohibits ownership of that property by non Mexican citizens.

Frankly there isn't much in the way of a good buy in coastal property anyhow. There have been far too many Norte Americanos going down there and throwing money around. Property prices including leases are not cheap. The last time I went to a smaller "resort" area (Rocky Point) the prices were such that I could have spent a weekend cheaper in San Diego and could have drunk the water. Cabo is simply insane, not that the countryside is very much to look at anyhow.

I'd sincerely recomend something stateside.

Mav, I've heard 2 versions of that story before, this makes 3. I'm not sure I'd want to be near Cabo or Cancun anyway. Too many turistas. I was actually thinking around Monterrey or Jalisco areas. Just far enough across the border you miss all the hoopla, but still somewhat civilized and the weather is very nice year round.

I still kick myself for not buying the house we looked at in Ocho Rios, Jamaica back in '99. I could have bought that estate for $50,000 USD (cheap) but I wasn't ready to sell out back then. The house was awesome, had about 15 acres of land and Mick Jagger owned an estate less than a mile down the road (considerably bigger than the one we looked at).

Oh, another reason I want to move? Today I get a delenquent tax statement for $400 on some mineral properties I own. Seems they "forgot" to mail me a bill on that, but I owe the penalty and interest anyway. I tried to explain to him I paid ALL my taxes on the same day and even asked the clerk to look to make sure all my accounts were paid.

The tax guy actually got pissed at me for asking them to waive the P & I. "Well that's tough, but we don't do that.":furious

Buy a large RV and live anywhere you want for a few days at a time then move on to change the scenery!

Mav is living the American Dream!

I've done the RV thing when I was in construction. It ain't bad, but at $3 a gallon and no sign of going down I don't think I could sustain that lifestyle for long with an 8 mpg behemoth.
