An ongoing military investigation supports allegations that U.S. Marines in November killed 24 innocent Iraqi civilians without being provoked, senior Pentagon sources said Friday. Charges, including murder, could soon be filed against Marines allegedly involved, the sources said.

I know war can make good people do bad things and in the heat of combat sometimes reason takes a back seat to emotions but if the allegations are true then they need to be courtmartialed.

Murtha said "Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood, they actually went into the houses and killed women and children."

Now is not the time to be worrying about stuff like this.  Nasty things are going to happen when you put a bunch of well armed people in a small area and they start trying to kill each other.  "Innocent" people who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time will get hurt.  If there's blame to be laid out, it needs to be after the job is done and we get them home.  Right now they still have a job to do, let them do it.

Its nice to draw lines to limit behavior after the fact, relying on secondhand information, while you are sitting in an office on the other side of the world.  I wonder if any of the ones who will judge them have the experience to understand the circumstances.  Somehow I doubt it.  This isnt about justice, or about punishing soldiers who did wrong.  This is about politics and getting ready for elections.

How many of the posters on AH BBS were there when the "incident" took place?

I think the military needs commended for investigating it instead of condemned for it happening in the first place. Without being there to see & experience what happened first hand I would hate to cast the first stone, the marines may have been justified in what they did & maybe not, it's for the investigation to sort out. Unlike a lot of other countries, the U.S. will punish wrongdoers more often than not even among it's military forces during a conflict.

If it is found that they did commit murder, they will suffer the consequences.

Certainly hope it didn't happen, and I doubt it did. But schutzstaffel style retribution has been perpetrated by US marines before.

I have no idea if its commendable or not.  What I know is that the Pentagon is performing these investigations now because somebody is making accusations and its almost election time.  Prominent politicians on Capitol Hill's left side want scapegoats to show the horrors of war, and those on the right want to pacify our Middle Eastern allies and the anti-war crowd by showing SOMETHING is being done.  They do share one thing with their compatriots across the aisle, in that I seriously doubt any of them care WHO is indicted, so long as SOMEONE is.  Finding nothing only fuels the conspiracy debates.  Finding something provides political ammo for both sides to sling at each other.  Someone will be indicted, someone will be charged with murder, and someone will be the scapegoat for whatever happened there.  Whatever their "finding" is, I seriously doubt will bear any resemblance to the truth, except by accident.
