Ostwind A Joke
« on: May 29, 2006, 08:45:12 AM »
I can’t believe how vulnerable the Ostwind has become. Just a little strafe by any fighter plane knocks out the most valuable part of the Ostwind, its turret.
Lately I’ve noticed that even a Spit V is able to kill the turret with one single strafe or let’s say with just a couple of bullets.
Somehow I don’t recall that it was that vulnerable in Aces High I.
Pls spare comments like ‘shoot down the plane first and you are safe’ b/c that’s not the issue here.
Anyone else feels the same way about the flak?

I do feel that way but I don't think that it is a wrong thing to occur.
It is, afterall, an open turret.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine an open-topped metal tub not protecting the crew when 500 rounds a second are bouncing around inside the tub.

Ostwind open turret should be that vulnerable to a hail of bullets. And after all, strafers still take a huge risk flying straight onto an Ostwind.

LOL the LTARS must be on break for memorial day...  I cannot believe I haven't seen a post from Moil yet  :D

Those be 20mm hispano cannons that they are shooting at your frail little body in that open turret.  If that really happened, I don't think you would want to shoot anymore.

As it is i'm not sure a .303 could knock out a turrte in AH, but in real life I bet it could.  Like was previously stated, those bullets bouncing around in there can be pretty dangerous at most any calibre at the right speed

Heya Howi:p

"Wirbelwind and Ostwind were fitted with very similar (especially designed) open-top (Wirbelwind's turret had 9 side panels and Ostwind's had 6 side panels) turrets mounted in the place of standard turrets. Ostwind's turret was nicknamed Keksdose - cookie tin. Main difference was that Wirbelwind was armed with quadruple 20mm Flak 38 L/112.5 guns while Ostwind was armed with single 37mm Flak 43 L/89 gun (both could be used against ground targets as well). 20mm Flak proved to be less effective than 37mm Flak and was eventually replaced by it. Both were produced by Ostbau Works in Sagan, Silesia in limited numbers due to the material shortages and the fact that Ostbau Works moved to facilities of Deutsche Eisenwerke in Teplitz and Duisburg due to danger of being overrun by the Soviets. Overall from May to November of 1944, only 87(105) Wirbelwinds were made, contrary to only 44(43) Ostwinds produced from July 1944 to March of 1945. Both vehicles were issued to Flugabwehrzug (AA platoons) units of Panzer Divisions. There were never enough of them to equip frontline units, which were in the need for adequate mobile AA defense. Both proved to be very effective against low flying aircraft"

Beautiful :aok

An Osty's gun is easy to kill because there's no real penalty for getting killed in AH.

How many RL combat pilots would fly straight into a 37mm gun firing at him?

There's a reason that gamey things like this happens, it's a game.

You can take anything with cannons, but a spit will do just fine...  You need to come in right on top of him and fire straight down at the turret.  The less angle you have to the turret, the less effective you will be.  I can usually straffe a turret with just one pass (say 10 rounds) and it will smoke like a chimney.  =)

I'm by no means an expert on this, however, I will state what I've noticed...

.303s are just as deadly to Ostwind turrets (if not more so) than cannon rounds.  Your not busting the armor...you're killing the crew.

Somewhere HT way back when, stated that the Ostwind turret would keep firing until all it's crew was killed.  This implies that it is not vehicle damage, but human damage you must worry about.

With this in mind...near misses by 1000 lbs bombs are not as lethal as 10 direct hits from .303s.  Those little buggers probably ricochet all around the inside of the "cookie tin" putting multiple holes in the crew.  I believe that .303s have a higher rate of fire, and probably better ballistics.  Therefore, you are more likely to land enough hits inside the turret with .303s than with baseball ballistic 30 mm.

If anyone wants to try this, lets go to the DA and test it out...I'm really interested in knowing what will kill an Ostwind turret.

Get rid of the digital zoom aspect of the game.

Ridiculous I can zoom in on an Ostys turret fire at 1k out, fire down to about 800 and pull out leaving the turret smoking.
Guess all pilots had the Mk III digital eye in WW2.

Needs fixing for Panzers and Tigers also, currently they can kills GV's farther than the record held by a modern day tank.
