Reenlistment Day 2002..Aboard USS LABOON..In the Persian Gulf..Tax free $27K reenlistment bonus!

Last Week at Dam Neck, VA..I'm a Petty Officer 1st Class now..My last graduating class as Course Supervisor for the Air Direction Controller course of instruction. I'm in the Black Jacket (It was moderately Cool that day). Funny the whole class was "Coasties".

And a couple from Security Duty (A Temp assignment us instructors do at NAS soon to be closed Oceana) As a First Class Petty Officer I mainly drove the post relief/Emergency response Van. Callsign Sierra Two. Since TAD guys couldn't be Section Leaders. An to whoever was ranting about Ironed/Starched uniforms..we had to do that..It was annoying since they aren't cut in such a way that would make it easy to press creases into.

Astac,

Weeks?  That was my grandfather's last name.  He was navy too.  Signed up around Dec 8 1941, received a field commission followed by OTS to make it permanent, entered the reserves after the war, and retired as a commander after about 40 years of service.

Strangely enough, I have another uncle Robert Weeks who was also Navy.

Er...  You wouldn't happen to be Robert "the third" would you?

Nope I'm actually one of 3 Robert Weeks(not related directly) in the Navy right now....and the first Robert D. Weeks in my family in the Navy..My Grandfather (Ernest) was Enlisted in WW2 and stayed on for 35 years got a commission in his last 10 years retired a LtJG..My father(Don) was Active for 4 then reserves for 16..other than that There are no others in my branch of the vast Weeks family in the USA in the service. The 3 of us have Continuous service since WW2..and like the Jimmy Buffet song..I am a "Son of a Son of a Sailor"

Thanks big.  It's tough at time for me to get these university students to take a break from the drinking to go out sailing everyonce in a while.  Sometimes it gets very frustrating.

1990 or 91

1988

For the courious: I carried a S&W 645 .45 Silver Tip hollow points 8+5 with 5 x tra clips, and a S&W .669 .9mm 12+1 black talons, as a back up.

In my trunk was an MP5 with 1000 rounds plus my darth vader, riot, gear, plus an old S&W 12 guage with a pistol grip and folding stock.

Our cars had the re-chipped 5.7 Chevy Vette Engines, oil / tranny coolers / super duty suspension, AKA as the 'P-pack" eagle GT tires...

SFCHONDO that is one fine painting. I wish I had a boot camp pic, but we had a gig that day and I missed the photo shoot. The only pic of me in uniform is a group shot of the Coast Guard Band.

Were you in an honor company in boot? When I went thru Alameda in '78 (OH-124) only Honor Guard and Band wore ascotts and braid.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

rpm, Yes I was in the Honor Guard in Basic. I went thru basic at Cape May, NJ. They closed Alameda by the time I joined in 1984. You are correct the only ones to wear the Ascott and braids were the Honor Guard guys.
Then in 1996 when I transfered over to the Army I had the priviage to return to Basic at FT. Leornard Wood, MO.
