Go offline, when on the ground press control-i (to display the frame rate) look at the FPS counter and open fire.

Do the FPS drop ?

Just curious, as I doubt this has anything to do with it but can you define "tons of memory" for me?

Also, just to make sure, that is an ATI 7800 and not a Geforce 7800 right?  Because theres a BIG difference.

Chance you need to post a DXDiag of your computer, but IMO your problem is more that your computer don't have the horsepower.

Did you change the default video options ?

Sounds like resource starvation, combined with using an AC97 sound type device.  Just a guess.

In the video settings of the game, make sure you are not checking the "Preload textures to video RAM", and the "Preload skins" options.  Again, just a guess.

Turn off all nonessential programs running in the background before you launch AH. You should be able to get it down to 20 processes running or so.
cntl alt delete will bring up your task manager and show you what you have running.

If you are using on board sound (AC97) try this as well.
click start--->run and type in dxdiag. Wait for it to load, then click on the sound tab. Set your acceleration slider back to the left a notch. You should be running it at no more than 3/4.

hope this helps a bit.

cheers,

My new pc arrives this weekend.  My old pc was a P3 800mhz, 394MB RAM, GeForce DDR-DVI.

I was at 60fps in tower, and in a furball they would drop to the high 20's.

I had SP1 installed with 15 programs running (including AH).  SP2 added 8 processes, so I nixed it to save strain on it.

If you are on a P-M notebook, yes, disable the power saving in the BIOS, Windows wont let you as far as I know.
