Meh, when I fly something with nose-mounted (or nearly so, 190s) I go a little longer than normal, becuase it doesn't scatter as badly. On a 110 or a 38 I might go out to 400, but most I'm 275-325 or so.

I use 200 in 109K and  300  worked really nice in FM2. Have not flown 38 since AH1, 300 there. I am bad shot, so i need to  go lot closer than 300  to hit anything,  mostly d40-100 against fighters, 200 against buffs if in 109K.(not using that Z feature,  just default view) Have made few runs in Spit16, default seems to work.

Wing-mounted .50 cal I'm usually between 275 and 300.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

 P-38 i'm at 650 since convergence is infinity. The P-47, i'm between 425 and 450.

I'm like Peter North shooting for distance and accuracy.

Since people are usually running away from me, I use max for cannons and only shorter for .303's :D
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Wolf, the guns in the 38 are not parallel. They DO converge. Just not so badly as wing-mounted guns.

Also, the range you set is where the bullets "fall" to on your gunsight. So if you're shooting at a plane at 250 and your convergence is set to 650, there's a chance your rounds could fly OVER the target on their way to 650 yards' convergence.

That happens more with cannon rounds than 50cal, though. But it does happen.

Yes, but the convergence is more or less negligable. All hits will still be within a 4 foot cone of dispersion even if u shoot 300 past yr convergence.

FWIW I set all guns on all planes no matter what type they are or where they are mounted at 300. Set your guns at the range you normally shoot at, not for where they are mounted. I usually shoot at 300ish, and when I get a guy at 300 I want the guns to hit him HARD no matter what I'm flying.

They may converge in here, but the boresight instructions I had for a P-38 said they do not converge, but instead offer a constant 30 inch circle of fire.

In any event, I set them for 650 in most planes. And certainly in the P-38.

Savage and Wolfala are correct.  There is no real need to adjust the convergence on the P-38 since they are nose mounted guns.  And as Savage pointed out, there were no convergence issues with the P-38 in real life.

There is a problem in AH. When you change the distance for convergence it also changes the verticle "lob" the projectile has to take so it crosses the set convergence distance as it passes horizontal. What that means is, if you have your convergence set for 650 and you aim at a target that is 250 you could shoot above[/b] the target. Try it offline with the .target command and see what I mean.

I still say its pointless to set your convergence past the distance you most often pull the trigger no matter what plane you are in. Set your convergence for killing that immediate threat, not plinking at runners.

Wing mounts - 250 yards.

Nose mounts - 500 yards.

Works for me.

I normally set my wing mounted guns around 225-250... in the 38 I have them set for 300... one interesting thing that I did by accident was set the 20mm a little further than the .50's... I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not but I was flying like that for months probably and people seemed to die enough when I actually did hit them.. so I'm just gonna leave it, unless someone can give me a reason not to. :)

I have everything set to 400 but I believe I have my 262 and 163 set to 300.

What I have seen closer the convergence the less you have to lead on a turn shot.  But on a wingmount the closer you have the guns, after that distance the bullets split/crossing then scattering.
