Sikboy, despite the gun difference, the plane itself is very similar. The DD had extra fuel tanks, if I recall, but the D itself was no different from the T, it just had a 20mm (which our Yak9U already has). So basically we have something better than a Yak9D, it's the 9U. More horsepower, same gun.
Krusty,
The better example I believe is the 9M v. 9T. They are nearly identicle, the only difference being the gun. 9M has the ShVAK, the 9T has the NS-37, the 9M has 4 additional wing tanks and the associated range improvement (someone give me a number? 400km?). When flying Yaks, range is a pretty big deal since they all have very short legs.
Given the similarities, and the fact that all of the components already exist in game, it seems to follow that the 9M would be modeled when they remodel the yaks. The biggest expense I would think, would be adding the wing tanks. I'm not sure what goes into that part of the modeling.
The Yak came as close as any Soviet design to spanning the war. When a fighter has that kind of longevity, we end up with a ton of varients. Some of them (Yak-3, Yak-9UT) would do well in the Aces High Main Arena. Some of them (Yak-1, Yak-9D) would see most of their use in events and Scenarios. Yet each of the variants has a role to play and should have a home in Aces High. In events I've had the chance to see how the Spit 1 and Hurri 1 compete with the 109E over the English Channel. I would like the opportunity to see how the Yak-1 fought against contemporary German planes.
Anyhow, I'd like the Yak-1, the Yak-9M and the Yak-3. (though I love the idea of the UT, I'd rather have these three).
