Stealer QB hospitalized after motorcycle accident

No helmet

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash and taken to a hospital Monday morning, and a pool of blood was found at the accident site.

"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.

Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details. There was no word on Roethlisberger's condition.

The crash happened at an intersection at the edge of downtown.

A silver Chrysler New Yorker with damage to the front passenger fender was removed and Roethlisberger's bike was loaded onto a flatbed truck. Police were detouring traffic around the crash scene as onlookers and media gathered.

In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger, helped by blind referees, helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.

Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional

.

In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet. "He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

In May 2005, Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore knee ligaments in a motorcycle accident and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s. Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

Perhaps helmets should be optional for him in football as well. He certainly has nothing to lose by not using one.

the "accident" was caused by a car making a left turn in front of him , not by lack of helmet. if he had full body armor he would still have been injured.

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Please point out where I said the helmet or lack of one had any bearing on the cause of the accident. There was also no indication in the article that he had any head injury.

I was just pointing out the irony that he makes his living in a sport that requires the use of a helmet where there are far less impact forces than while driving a motorcycle in traffic. If he TRULY believed in "personal freedom" for his head he would play without a helmet too. Does that make it clear for you??

ROFL!!!!

On a serious note did he have any head injuries? If he didn't hit his head, nor if he didn't get a head injury, a helmet doesn't matter in that case. In the example of Kellen Winslow's knee injury from a motorcycle accident, a helmet doesn't figure in either.

Keep in mind if I ever ride again, I'll always wear a helmet. My first day riding when I was 9 taught me that lesson.

the NFL requires players to wear helmets, pa law says helmets on bikes are optional.

his head hit the windshield of the car then hit the pavement.

the motorcycle was not equipped with air bags, seat belts or a roll bar. we need more laws, :rolleyes back:

Lady with Maine plates... the Patriots are hiring hitmen (or in this case, hit ladies) to go after players now... i guess paying hitmen is cheaper than paying thier game winner kicker...

oh yea, i know the intersection where he got hit too... many accidents happen at the particular intersection.

I think he missed a payment to the referees for SB40. They sent Grandma Guido out for a hit job.

here you go.

While Winslow's contract forbade him from riding a motorcycle, Roethlisberger's contract does not prohibit him from riding motorcycles, even helmetless. The standard NFL contract prohibits risky behavior, but that is noat precisely defined. Pennsylvania repealed its mandatory helmet law in 2003.
