so what are you saying, we need roll bars on our bikes now? Hell if i'll wear a seat belt on a bike. I've been saved by simply rolling off a bike rather than go tumbling with it as it smashes into something else.

I am willing to bet that the majority of accidents that involve motorcycles were caused by a car and not the fault of the bike rider.  Even if it wasn't Big Ben's fault he was still a handsomehunk for not only taking a risk on a bike while under contract but to not wear a helmet while doing said risky activity.  I'm not saying he had no right to do what he did he should have excercised a bit more responsibility in his decision making.  

If someone's paying me millions of dollars I'm pretty much going to make sure that that person/company/whatever is going to get the most return on their investment.

He just rolled the dice and came up snake eyes.  Now he's paying the price for that decision.

Actually, the majority of motorcycle accidents are the result of mistakes made by short term riders. Not only people who have just recently begun to ride, but also those who have recently begun riding again.

As a rider myself, I'm both amazed and saddened by those who constantly state that it's always the fault of the driver of the car.

What we need is more brains... Then people might predispositioned to protect their noodles...

Seriously, if anyone honestly thinks that not wearing a helmet is reasonable, then they've never seen a kid's brains scattered on a roadway.

It's their head... However, I'd find another way to express one's personal freedom or rebel against "the man" in a way that is less self-destructive.

Well, I'm not a rider and will never profess to know that much about it other than I wouldn't be caught riding a bike without a helmet.  But yeah, it seems every excuse I've heard regarding an accident invariably is directed to the driver of the car.

By no means am I saying the drivers of the cars are not at fault, most are pretty much as culpable. I've seen drivers screw up pretty bad.

Remember that most accidents are the result of a series of events, seemingly somewhat unrelated, but if the series is interrupted, the resulting accident doesn't happen, or at least isn't nearly as catastrophic.

I'm not picking on you or calling you out. I am just saying if EVERYONE would admit to the truth, accidents would be far less likely to occur. My fellow motorcycle riders especially included.

I used to be one of those riders that only wore a helmet when the weather was foul, carried it on the helmet hook beside the bike when fair weather was present.

One day, (1980) I left work at 3:30pm, it was 90 deg. outside. I was yakking with a co-worker out by the parking lot, and just put my helmet on along with my pig-skin gloves without realizing it. About halfway home, I thought "What the hell am I doing putting my helmet on in 90 deg. weather!". I almost pulled over to take it off. 15 minutes later I was involved in an accident which sheared 1/4" of of the helmet flat from road rash (that would have been my skull). I walked away unscathed except for some aches and pains. I've wore a helmet ever since. Someone or something was watching out for me that day.

in this case the on-coming car made a left turn in front of him, the law says "when turning left, YIELD TO ON-COMING TRAFFIC", the cars driver is at fault but all people can talk about is the lack of a HELMET.

if he had been wearing a helmet he would have still ended up in the hospital.

i rode bikes for years and i can't remember all the times a car pulled out in front of me, made a left turn in front of me, changed lanes and pushed me off the road. that's the reason i don't ride anymore, i could not find a "up armored" bike.

it's a wonder i'm still alive.

I've worn a helmet everytime I ride and that included riding in 118 degree weather on city streets where the temp around my legs was over 140 degrees from pavement and cars nearby. My helmet now is a full face one with vents and I have an armored mesh jacket for warm weather. I've been trained far more than the average guy and I know, since it's happened more than once, that I can be taken down on the bike. It's called ATGATT or all the gear all the time. I don't have the armored mesh pants but won't ride without full length jeans a coat, gloves and the helmet. Road rash absolutely sux.

Traffic collisions for motorcycles are definately not just the fault of cars / trucks but also often the result of a motorcyclist getting their aligator arse over their tweety bird ability / skills.

A fact. 90% of bike fatalities are riders of less than 2 years experience (and typically 19-20 years old, who drive horribly ANYway:furious )
