Lancaster + Tallboy

Used to sink the Tirpitz. Could used to sink CVs and wipe out large sections of towns.

A catch could be that it would arm unless it fell for, say, 12-15k feet. As this weapon was designed to take advantage of its terminal velocity of 3600 fps, it had to be dropped from 20k or higher.

Not a horribly difficult request, I don't think.

That woud be cool, some kinda of perk cost for it though, like 2 points or somethin, im pretty sure if u hit a good target u will get it back.  Im pretty sure some one said this but.........wheres the grand slam. I figured all the british guys would be screamin for ah to put it in.

Yea the Tripitz had a great story during ww2. The british tried everthing from sinking with everything they had, ships, attacker planes, dive bombers, torpedo bombers, lvl bombers, SAS units, subs, and nothing would take it down until some guy made the Tallboy. I forget how many lancasters took part in the mission but each one had a tallboy, and the lancasters were flown the best night bomber group, who could get accurate hits on targets at night and day. I saw photage of the attack with the lancasters, and when those bombs fell there were splashes bigger than the ship seen from 20k and 1 or 2 tallboys hit the tripitz and just blew it up like it was just a toy. I think only 20 german sailors survived. I can't remember, but it is a great story on how the germans keep the Tripitz from being destroyed and the ways the british tried to destroy her.

i beleive she was in port and when the lancs flew over they used this smokescreen. so they didnt drop but 1 lad go frustrated and dropped his bomb at random. it hit the Tirpitz.

so dumb hitler ordered here to go to a different port but while on her way, she was in range of british heavy bombers. so a lot of lancs came in and blew her to BITS.

I watch the military channel :P

Will I thought she was on her way to a new port, when the lancs droped the Tallboy, because the Tripitz only used the smoke screen when she was docked in the Forjs. I saw the video and like 2 tallboys landed right on top of her.

Why stop at the Tallboy, Grandslam also.

(Left) Tallboy, (middle) bouncing bomb, (right) Grandslam

Tallboy -
12,000lbs - 21ft long, 38inches diameter, optimum drop alt 18,000ft

Grandslam -
22,000lbs - 25.5ft long, 46inches diameter, optimum drop? was calculated that when dropped from 13000m (42000ft) it came close to the speed of sound.

Would suggest if introduced that minimum drop altitudes are set.

Speed of sound for the Grandslam??

Seems pretty paltry compared to this:

It was an extraordinary weapon, an apparent contradiction in terms, since it had at one and the same time the explosive force of a large high-capacity blast bomb and the penetrating power of an armour-piercing bomb. On the ground it was capable of displacing a million cubic feet (29,000 m³) of earth and made a crater which it would have taken 5,000 tons of earth to fill. It was ballistically perfect and in consequence had a very high terminal velocity, variously estimated at 3,600 and 3,700 feet per second (1,100 to 1,130 m/s or about 2,500 mph), which was, of course, a good deal faster than sound so that, as with the V-2 rocket, the noise of its fall would be heard after that of the explosion.

PS, what's the name of the balding, bulbous ordnance pictured standing between the tallboy and the bouncing bomb?

Think the fat bulbous ordnance was the final development of the Grandslam, just the war ended before he could be dropped in anger ;) .

That was Barnes Wallis, the same guy who made the bouncing bomb for the dams raid (amongst other things).

The raid was done by 617 'Dambusters' Squadron and 9 Squadron, they still argue over which of them actually sunk the ship ;)
