Yesterday, my wife and I drove the Jawbone Canyon and Piute Mountain roads. Roughly seventy miles of terrain that shifts from desert to pine forest and back to high desert. I posted a few pics on my site.
On the way back through Onyx towards Walker Pass, we saw a couple of hitchhikers with backpacks. I immediately stopped. My wife asks, "What are you doing?"
I then had to explain... the
Pacific Crest Trail runs right through the area. Anyone wearing a pack between Walker Pass and Onyx is probably on the walk. I've given hikers rides from Walker Pass down to Onyx and a friend of my neighbor made the walk a couple of years ago. He kept an online journal and it was just fascinating.
Anyway, we picked up the two hikers, a man and a woman that have been walking since April, some 650 miles between Walker Pass and the start in Mexico. They're planning on finishing up in Canada by October.
Man... I wish I could afford that much time off from work. Maybe when I retire.
