Memorial Flight for Ken Lloyd
« on: June 27, 2006, 10:20:52 PM »
Ken Lloyd, a P-38 pilot with the 80th FS Headhunters, died Father's Day, of pulmonary fibrosis. He was a dear friend for the last few years, and I am planning a memorial flight for him for this Wednesday night, around 9 eastern. It will be an all P-38 flight, any model accepted, so long as it has an 80th FS skin on it. If you're interested, email me or PM me.

savage{nospam}@327th.com

I'll not be posting details here, so email or pm and I'll get you details. We'll be filming it and converting it as well, it will be posted on the website, and a copy sent to Ken's family.

Not finding a photo of Ken Lloyd yet, but from John Stanaway's history of the 8th FG, that included the 80th FS Headhunters  "Attack & Conquer", comes the description of Ken Lloyd's one kill, August 17, 1944

"Jay Robbins was leading the 80th Squadron at 14,000 feet over the target when he saw several Oscars below at about 5500 feet.  He took Copper Red flight down first and called down the other Copper flights when he saw there were about 10 Oscars bursting in and out of the clouds below.

He dropped his own tanks and led his flight down on one Oscar that was quick enough to split-s out of range.  Another Oscar was indecisive enough to first turn into Robbin's pass then turn away when the P-38 got into range.  It was a deadly mistake and the Oscar pilot paid for it when heavy gunfire from the P-38 shattered the left wing, engine and cockpit from close range.  The Oscar fell out of control and burned all the way to the ground.

Quickly shifting his attention to another Oscar, Robbins got hits on the desperately maneuvering plane without a single telling blow.  Lt. Kenneth Lloyd took over and forced the battered Oscar to the treetops.  Finally the Japanese fighter staggered a moment and Lloyd shot it down the few remaining feet into the jungle."

Hopefully Savage will have a photo of Mr. Lloyd to post.

As much as I love the 38G, I'd suggest silver J's and Ls in the 80th skins.  The silver J is the Jay Robbins bird "Jandina" while the L is "Miss Cheri"  Ken Lloyd was with the Headhunters during that timeframe from what I can tell.

Actually, Ken and I never quite got around to swapping pictures, I wish we had. Ken did not join the 80th until after they had gotten J and L models, but I figured we have appropriate skins for the G, and he had friends who flew the G. I know Ken would want them remembered and honored as well, so fly the model you prefer, with an 80th FS skin, in honor of Ken and his squadron.

I will be waiting for the map change today, after that happens, I'll answer the emails and PM's with a plan, and a place to fly the plan.

Thank you all for your time and interest, I know Ken would be pleased and stunned, as he was very humble and appreciative of the attention he received, like most all of his generation, he felt it wasn't really him, but those he was with, who were so important.

I would like to be a part of this. What country is this going to take place in? Knights, Rook, or Bish? Of course you could set this up in the DA so that everyone could participate without having to change country in the MA. Just a suggestion.

to your friend Ken, and all the members of the 80th. May he fly the heavens on God given wings.

I really wish I could be there tonight, please tell his family that my thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

I hope someone takes pictures as well as film, this would be a great film to have posted to the HTC main page.

Monteini agreed.  Can see no better salute to Mr Lloyd then having a replica of his aircraft in the game.

You skinners read this? Fester, Kev, Rogerdee and many others that do a spectacular job skinning we have a new project for you:)
