Tank movement
« on: June 28, 2006, 01:31:55 PM »
HT,

in RL tanks it was possible to make 1 track go forward and the other
track backward to pivot the tank in position.

is there anyway to program this. so that when u push your joystick
full left or full right, that it would make the tank turn like that?

Actually in real life 1 track could be going forward and the other could be braked, so that it would pivot around the braked track -- still much better than we have now.

I believe the King Tiger had that ability....

Say....there's an idea...how many perks would that be worth? (but, I digress)

But it would be nice to be able to pivot.

Both are correct smidsy.  They usually used the braking system while in motion, ie just slow the track on the side you want to turn to.  The other method was either only engaging one side or the other to turn tightly or reverse one side and the other side forward to pivot in place.

The M2A2 Bradley uses all 3 methods to turn depending on yolk position and speed.  Plus one thing we don't have in game that you would run into in the real world, DIRT!!!

When you sit and spin in a tracked vehicle dirt collects on the inside of the track on the "forward" side....think of a shovel.  When you get enough dirt (I have done this in less that 1/4 of a revolution) packed up near either the drive sprocket or tensioner it neatly slides the tracks off of the rollers.  Not fun to get them back on when you are on a side of a hill with nice georgia red clay packed into the sprockets ;)

Back to the request, it would be a great addition to the ground game.  It would give tigers a better ability to engage spread out targets.

This is true of modern tanks, but I don't think any of the AH modeled tanks were capable of one forward, one backward movement.  IIRC, all had to be in gear, forward or backward, and as others stated, a hand brake could be used to tighten turns to the point of pivoting on one.

By 'that'...I meant one track forward...one track back.

The Ferdinand was like that as well....but I think that pig had two engines also. I think....don't quote me.

but transversing the turret in the Tiger is so slow...being able to lock up one trak would be a great benefit.

how about having a sprocket come off while cruising through a nice big field.. happened to me in korea, fastest pivot in M113 history. dumbarse mechanics replaced the sprocket cushions and reused the "locking" bolts.. a big no no.

Damn 101....that would suck arse.

I though I lost a drive sprocket.....picture this....

Ft. Benning in August....training exercise before a NTC rotation....this was just going to be a simple 2 day NBC training exercise.  Well this track (a bradley) wasn't mine, the usual drive had a bad case of dry balls or something like that.  Anyway I was picked to drive this track to give the green BC (Bradley Commander) and the gunner a "feel" for being in a NBC area.

First off the forced air system to the driver was broke (Imagine wearing a mask with a 4 ft hose running to the filter element and trying to beath through it, well this system could either heat or cool the air and force it into your face, remember this is a georgia august ).  Plus the right vison block was cracked over half way.

Anyway so there we are flying through a nice georgia backroad on the way to a decon site, me sweating and cursing up a storm, the BC and gunner also miserable when we go from a respectable 25mph to exactly 0 mph in about .1 sec.

My first thought after I came to was that the track had jumped and become wraped around the drive sprocket.  But it didnt,  we / I ran into a 150 year old hickory tree.  Some of the track was bent at almost a right angle, the front right armor skirt was damn near torn off and I cracked the transmission.

Oh the tree you say....well it moved about 1/4 of an inch and lost a bit of bark.  :O

By now it was getting hard to breath and I was like WTF it shouldnt be any harder than before right?

So after choking a few times I end up almost tearing an ear off by yanking the mask off and noticed my face cup was filled with blood.  Busted nose and a slight concussion.  One thing I have to say is that they are not lying when they talk about seeing starts after you have been hit.  I saw em all week.  ;)

Oh yea we had another guy catching a ride with us....he was very pissed when he came to :(

ha ha ha... hello mr bradley, im mr immovable object... nice to meet you.. ha ha... ive hit trees before.. nothing big.  Took them out and just scratched the armor a bit..

ive had cherry drivers hit the brakes like they would in a car... almost rolled the track end over front.. talk about stopping on a dime. very hard to stay in the TC hatch when that big tracks stops like that..
