Ken Lloyd Memorial flight snaps

Every once in a while you do something really cool in this game that feels bigger then the game.

Kudos to the 30+ folks who put the chess pieces aside and hopped in 38s to remember SaVaGe's real life 38 pilot friend from the 80th Headhunters, Ken Lloyd.

Here are screen shots from the event.

First is Savage and at the point a shot of  myself and another 38 tucked in tight.  There were others behind us obviously.

Looking back from the same spot.  30+ P38s trying to keep it together.

Once we reached A10 we all ran fast down the runway and a bunch of us landed and then parked it on the edges so that Savage and a few others could do the missing man.

Here's Savage leading the 38s down the runway past the parked birds with engines running.

More of the same.

Different views of the guys running fast and low down the runway.

Another shot  Savage out front and beginning his climb

Savage climbing hard while the other 38s continue on low below him.  Kinda made me think of High Flight for just a sec.

".....My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God."

A bit over the top for a flight sim maybe, but it sure looked and felt good from where I was sitting.

On the mass 38 Fighter sweep flown after the memorial, there was a race to see who could get the first Japanese plane shot down for a good 80th HH screenshot.

This wasn't the first, but it's a good screenshot of CorkyJr knocking down a N1K in a Headhunter P38L "Miss Cheri" :)

I'm waiting to see what we get as far as films and screenshots, and then I'll try to get the stuff edited and put together. The dusk aspect is going to make it a little difficult, as only those familiar with AH will understand that. I'm not much when it comes to editing and putting stuff like this together, so if we're lucky I'll get some help on it.

The squad GC has offered to put at least some of the stuff up at the squad (327th) website. I'll announce it when there is something there.

Don't forget, if you filmed it, or took screenshots, send them to me at savage{nospam}@327th.com

I'm only sorry I missed it.  I got home about a half hour too late to join in.  I'm glad to see you guys carrying on these traditions.  I know its just a sim and all, but if heart counts for anything you guys are the real deal.

Oh, and I dont consider High Flight to be at all over the top, celebrating the life of a man who was a pilot.

Anyone who has ever tasted the freedom granted to us poor earthbound mortals by the power of our mechanical wonders, or even only sat in a chair and dreamed of flying would understand.

But you have to have it in full.  The first part is my favorite.

Quote
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space...
...put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Got a nice screenshot of an 80th G model flaming a N1K.  Thought it looked kinda cool so adding it to the 80th stuff.
