You should post this in the Harware & Software forum.
That said, whenever you have a question or problem of this type, it is virtually impossible to give an informed and helpful response without enough information about your system. The more difficult the problem, the more critical is the need for complete information. You can make the whole process MUCH easier if you give a complete breakdown of your system HW specs, OS, DX version etc. so whoever might try to help you can make a proper evaluation of the problem and avoid the need to ask many questions of you in their response. If you go slowly and pay attention to the details you can save alot of headaches, lost hair, sleep,pet abuse etc.
BTW, with a new HD and a clean install you are in the best position to get everything right and optimized for maximum performance and stability of your system IF you don't screw it up
So, try again in the right forum with the right information and I and others will almost certainly be able to help you out. I myself type so poorly that it takes me a 1/2 a friggin hour to compose a decent post so I dont even bother to answer unless they make the proper effort in their request. This is NOT a conceit but just a brutal reality due to my own ineptitude
ALL this applies to anyone asking questions about computers, of course becuase they are extremely complex beasts and most of us only know enough to get by about them. A little knowledge and patience goes a looooooong way towards a happy and troublefree relationship with your box
