Out of game life effecting your flying
« on: July 04, 2006, 11:40:39 AM »
Anyone else notice. Personal things going on outside of the game effecting their flying?

I dont mean time playing the game but how well they fly.

Last month or so has been kinda rough on me in my personal life and I have noticed I am having WAY more bad days flying then good in that time.

I am finding fights I normally win I am loosing And fights I normally would at least fly well enough in to be competitive I am getting thrashed like a newb

I am finding I have moments I do well. or do well in short spurts but am having problems being consistant.

I am attributing alot of this to things that are weighing heavy on my mind outside of the game.

Anyone else find the same things happen to them?

its probably not that your doing bad...most likely your in a bad mood and not paying as much attention to the game as you normally would.  i use this game sometimes to take out agression. when i get kilt, i do stupid things like go back to the fight with planes like spit 1 or p40b ect...then there's always the pink spit. i would be pissed if i got shot down by one. you could also try drinkin while you play. works for me. if your not a happy drunk i dont suggest this though. replacing computer smashed computer parts gets pricey.

are you getting frustrated quicker?  i find i get frustrated with myself if i make mistakes much quicker if i am in a bad mood, then it is very much a downward spiral from there.

I don't think its much connected to my outside life, but I definitely do have on days and off days... I would figure everyone does.

I did notice that since I started my squad, my performance personally has improved a lot.. .I think it is because I feel as the leader I need to set an especially good example to my guys.  Since I recruit newbs almost exclusively and train them up, I spend a lot of time dueling with them and really thinking about who is doing what.  That translates well into the main arena.

Dred,
It's hard to imagine that you have bad days, but I guess we all do.  Personal life can affect my flying but not as much as dumb mistakes.  Couple that with Vox200 trash talking and the let the steaming begin.
We've had our share of VOX200 "duels" and I know it's all in fun, I hope anyway lol.   Whatever is going on on your personal life hopefully will take care of itself and I hope it gets better for you.  We all sincerily hope to see you back in top form in your 109-F4.   You do some amazing stuff in that plane and I strive to fly it like you do.

On another note, I see your from NJ, which is where I grew up too.
Jackson NJ,  Exit 7A on the Turnpike lol.

See you in the skies, hope things get in order soon.

I don't know.... I have good days and bad days flying but when I have a bad day in real life (Usually relating to some idiotic thing the wife has done)  I go get some wine put the headphones on and just lose myself in the game, let her worry about dinner and the kids for the night.  I simply put all concentration on the game and don't think about anything external. I don't know if I fly any better or worse at these times but it is usually relaxing to fly and not think about real life.....

This is also how I quit a 2 year smoking habit in 2 weeks just fly continuously all day and keep some of those real nasty tasting saw dust filled cheap things by the comp..  When you do laps back into reality and think you want a smoke Light one of those up, manage to choke it down and you won't want another for a while. Then go back to flying. Eventually the urge to light one up just went away.....   Although one of those big fat swisher sweet kings sounds good from time to time, Haven't broke down yet though. :) Haven't smoked anything since starting AH what 2.5 to 3 years ago :)

For me it comes down to the amount of focus i have while i'm playing. If i'm totally emerged in the game, calling con's out on vox, keeping my SA up, and watching not just the con i'm fighting, but the 3 above and behind him, i usually have a good session.

If i'm even semi distracted, by the phone, two-way on nextel, dog jumping around, friends creating drama for no reason, i find that i'll lose most fights. I'll get suckered into a postion that puts me at the mercy of the enemy, not the other way around. At that time i just log, until i'm in a better mood.

I do have bad gamedays due to real life difficulties.  If I am in a bad mood, its pointless to try AH................unless that first engagement is a good one (very, very rare).

Definatly.

Flying is very mentaly demanding. You need to keep track of alot of things and you need to be patient. If your angry, tired and/or frustrated you have a harder time focusing and hence your more distracted and can keep track of less things at the same time. Hence you fly worse.

Basicly you fly best when your mentaly well rested and alert.

Yes, RL does influence my gameplay a great deal.

On good days time flies literally... mostly im having "good days" skill wise as well.

Bad days I get frustrated with MA pretty fast usually. Then Im either off to the TA, taking it out on poor, unsuspecting noobs or i find a poor soul that goes to DA with me.

On real bad days its either fooling around with good friends (having sent a warning first) in the DA (or maybe MA). Thanks and >>S<<, you know who you are :). Or i simply dont bother logging on.

That is what is so funnay about these guys that strive to be the best of all pilots etc etc lolh blah blah blah guys.

This game is a lot like Football (American as if  there were any other LOLHROTFF) in the sense that no matter how good one team is over another, On any Given Sunday anything can happen.

Most fights are much the same way.  Both Football and AtoA combat are attibutable to so many different factors, that no matter how good you are,  situations will arise that are totally out of your control which will cost you the fight.

The one thing you want to be able to rule out is you as the pilot, so you at least have that going for you.  And this all comes down to concentration, as flayed mentioned above.  No doubt about it, when I have worked all day and had a late evening practice run, then try to log on with my hip pockets draggin my concentration is going to be affected, reaction time etc, etc, etc.  Sometimes you can throw the switch and your a killin Lev Bot and other times your a drone for all the fodder in the MA.

I find when I am having trouble tracking more than 3 or 4 cons I'm running out of steam and its time to go bomb crap mindlessly or log.
