Would be nice but it would be British, not American. The US Army didn't use it. The Brits modified some of their shermans to take their 17pd anti tank gun. The gun is actually mounted on it's side so it could fit in the turret. It was used more in the Tank Destroyer role.

no it wouldnt, the 17 pounder was WAY more effective than anything the americans fielded, due in part to their use of SABOT rounds.

Yep, that's what Michael Wittmann and the 3 other Tigers he was with thought just before one Firefly knocked out all 4 of them.

The key is that the 17 pounder cannon could compete with the Tiger's 88 and could penetrate the Tiger's armor.

That doesn't mean the Firefly could stand up to the Tiger's 88 any better then any other Sherman, but it packed the punch to fight the Tiger and was a threat to the Tiger.

  TDs,,,yep.  Would recommend Stug III tho.  More common and had two major models - 75mm AT and 105 Hwtzr.
