its noy illegal to drop objrcts out of aircraft as long as you make sure no persons or property on the ground is harmed.

I am not sure if psychological harm counts though  :confused:

Stupidity is contagious. The teenagers were stupid, there was a stupid reacton on the ground, law enforcement will never make that charge stick, and then to top it all off the moron that writes for that site imposed his interpretation upon readers.

It would not have made national news (didn't as far as I could tell).

I seriously question the judgement of anyone that throws things out of an airplane over a football game.  I truly believe that anyone who does this in today's climate is too judgement impared to retain a pilot's license.
