Bomb Fuzes
« on: July 19, 2006, 02:50:45 AM »
I thought this had been mentioned before, but I did a couple of searches and didn't find anything.

How 'bout delay fuzes on bombs so we can skip bomb, or do some really low level attack missions?  Not looking for adjustable fuzes, just a standard delay so you could drop at 600 feet without blowing yourself up.  Too hard to code?

Actually, it would be kind of interesting to be able to drop bombs with time-delay fusing - say 1-9 minutes or something.  Imagine upping on a field and seeing a 1,000 lb bomb on the runway unexploded (yet), and wondering if it is going to go off while you are taking off.

Imagine the fun you'd have in a bomber, dropping your load the length of the runway with a 1 or 2 minute delay and wacking all the uppers who are trying to come after you.  Talk about a base suppression tool...

Might be fun to try.  Might be useful on 'sneak raids' too - lay a bunch of time delayed stuff on a town, then come on back with a goon or M3 and see if you can take the base when the town blows.

I was actually just talking about enough delay to get your plane out of the frag pattern.  I don't know that there were bombs in the Big One that allowed minutes of delay, but I do know they had 4-5 second delay bombs for low alt and skip bombing, bombs dropped on shipping.  Would make A-20's, Boston's, etc. much more effective in the MA, FSO, etc.

I also remember seeing a history channel where they were dropping parachute retarded bombs on low level bombing runs to give the bombers time to get out of the way.

That would be another interesting variant for AH2 - imaging popping up on the runway for takeoff and seeing a load of parachuting bombs come in over the runway.

This would be a good role for the B25, A20, and BostonIII. They all could carry parachute bombs. On the history channel I say something about this, and B25 bombers in the pacific would fly about 100ft above a jap base drop the para bombs, and this bomb would slowly float to the ground then a little tap, and BOOOM! It was very cool. Parabombs would be good in AH, for attacking towns, factories, and light armored vehicals. These could be the only bombs in the game that would blow up below 400ft.

Mossie low-levellers used a standard 11-sec delay, shallow-divers used instantaneous. The idea being that the first (low-level) wave got clear, before their bombs went off simultaneously with the impact-fused weapons of the shallow-divers.

They also used some long-delay fuses on occasion as well. Raised a drink in the mess afterwards as each was scheduled to detonate.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

I have to agree with the fuzes. As far as I see it, you could type in a regular dot command such as the .salvo command to activate just how long you want the fuze to run. Minimum would be at least 20 seconds, maximum 9 minutes as said by EagleDNY.

It would be awesome to just drop the bombs, wait in an M3 for everything to blow, and then sweep in with the raid. I say this is a must!:D
