Stick-stirrers....
« on: July 19, 2006, 10:36:33 AM »
Ok, we've all seen it done. You drop in behind someone, and all the sudden the plane starts wobbling and jerking all over the place as your hapless target starts randomly flinging the stick around in a circle as hard as he can, hoping you miss or overshoot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it's ALWAYS annoying.

So why not do something about it? If someone tries that nonsense have the plane lose control, controls lock, SOMETHING, ' cause I don't see HOW that sort of rapid, constant control input can be good for ANY plane.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Well usually the pilot well get a message "dont move your controls so rapidly", and then a control lock up for "stick-stirring"

Also, If you stall a bird - I'd imagine that might look crazy on someones FE

So you think they should just fly straight and level so you can shoot them down easier?

One thing you need to understand, if you "stir" your stick as hard as you can, the game is going to lock you up.  Also, movement of other aircraft during control input is not as smooth in your view as it is on theirs.  That's why the 190's always look like they are flopping around so bad, their roll rate is very high and they can roll one way, then back another before your FE updates his actual position.

To say that all they are doing is jerking the stick around as hard as they can is very presumtpive on your part.

The only enemy that didnt' appear to "stir" to me have been those that I've snuck up on, every one else has done the best they can to get out from in front of my guns....as they should.

In other words, I'm not sure I understand what it is you are ranting about here?

Some aircraft also produce the 'floppy fish' effect when they snaprole. Particularly if it wasn't a graceful one.

it looks kinda weird but i think when people do that they're still  rotating on the same vertices, so jus shoot in theyre general direction youll probably hit em.

I remember reading Va for the F6F was 260kts, so above this IAS wouldn't it suffer structural damage if it's stick was stirred?

i dont know personally i stick stir i mean hell if it can keep me from dieing so be it. all you half to do on a stick stirer is slow down get 200 away and pul the trigger. personally i think stick stiring is a good defensive manouver. i mean hell if it was real life wouldnt you do anything to get the extra 20 seconds of flight?

I 've had plp do this with me too many times to count, and it has rarely if not nvr worked. I really don't see the point, the foo always seems to slow waaaay down and pops his plane around and up until it's top is facing me,

(please excuse the crudeness of the drawing)

it is at this time that i close and then proceed to blow the bejesus out the foo.:)  although this maneuver may make for a potentially easy kill, it is nonetheless annoying at times. (a good deflection shot for the kill is far more satisfying than a point-blank beat down)

This is the result, more often then not:

I think he's talking abort the "torque roll type maneuver" we have in aces high...Full Power, Wep on, put the nose at an extreme angle of attack, full left and back deflection of the stick, and full left rudder...

thats what I think he is talking about

lol:D  that torque roll is quite fun.

I mean the whole p47/Spit16 bouncin around in all directions changing heading instantaneusly yet managing to go in the same general direction.

but hey, either way just blast em! (although that torque roll is much harder to hit)

No, that's not what I'm talking about. Incidentally, cav, I hear that described most often as a snap-roll.

What I'm talking about are the people who rock the stick forward and back to make their plane pitch up and down, (if my interpretation, Yoshimbo has captured that perfectly in his artwork. Then again, I'm no art critic) or LITERALLY rotate the stick through its full range of motion (like when you're calibrating).

Most of the time, no, it DOESN'T work, at least not for very long, but it gets REAL annoying.

I'd be willing to bet that part of it stems from flying with "Twisty" sticks that put the Rudder (Yaw) axis on the same stick as the Ailerons (Roll), and Elevators (Pitch) axes. This make it much easier to accidently add un-intended control inputs, especially under pressure.

Combined with the afore mentioned visual lag due to position packets trying to update both your and his locations in 3D space.

When he suddenly finds himself in a spot, and frantically tries everything in his bag of tricks to escape, the results are probably what you are seeing.

Its just a part of the Sim you have to get used to, and try to make the best of.
