So how's everyone liking the IL-2 demo?
« on: September 04, 2001, 12:35:00 AM »
I heard the newest beta 4 is a 200 MB update...

Is everyone enjoying multiplayer? I've had some good mp missions.  The detailed cockpits are very nice. It's good to be able to play around with prop pitch and actually watch the pitch gauge move with altitude and rpm setting.

But I think the real appeal is the fact this sim is Eastern Front.  I find it very refreshing to be fighting against Russians.

Invidual charasteristics of each planes is very nice. The recorded videos looks just about how it would look like in RL. The planes fly in the air smoothly, constantly wobbling a little (not flying in rails), which makes them much more lively to watch. The well built 3d models and big plane scaling adds up to that.

Also the gun modeling is very very challenging. You have to fill the screen with the plane if you want to hit accurately. d300 is no-no, especially with the g2 20mm, which explodes usually prematurely if shot from too far.

Literally the game is stuffed with little realistic details, which makes it very immersive. The beautiful eye-candy just boosts that feeling. Im waiting for 6vs6 or even those 16vs16 dogfights! Its not MMPOG, which is about only flaw it has, MP readiness  negates some of that downside.

Krhm..  300 meter shots are still easy (0.30d)
I've got kill from 0.86 at best  :)
but I prefer shooting from 0.12-0.22 (at closer, theres danger of enemy maneuvering out of sight or making insta stop in the air behind you)

Though, first it seemed very hard to hit anything beyond 0.10

In a way better than AH and in some parts it loses.
What I like most, is that you must have alot more experience in shooting than with AH.
Now real dogfights can take place, without getting shot in first moment when tally gets you in sight for split second, no matter what maneuver you're doing.

Ps. for truth, those far hits & kills have been made with IL-2, spray & pray since it has so much ammo  ;)

Fishu, u must have a rock solid ac to be getting "easy" kill at 300 meters.  I haven't heard anyone say that.  Most people can't get hits until 200 meters or less.

Which BTW is where most aerial gunnery took place.

I think the gunnery modelling is some of the finest I've seen with the little smoke trails.

Well, it does not have a B17 but all that means is I get shot down from lower altitudes.

Some online connection issues have been raised and computer literate players have devised solutions but they require more expertise than I and many others possess.

I was able to get into online games from day one of the beta with AOL DSL but never from the other computer with AOL on dial up modem.

Since switching ISP to SWBell on DSL I cannot enter online games with the beta or the demo and there are others with connect problems that Maddox Games must address

Given their response to other problems and the howl that will arise if people cannot easily connect I feel they will fix it prior to gold.

I really like the blast damage, if I drop near something it gets hurt bigtime if not destroyed.
The eye candy is fantastic, railway signals, noisy moving vehicles, including trains.

Water moves.

It has a couple of warts but way fewer than we are used to getting in Gold boxes let alone a demo.

Comparing IL2 with any MMOG is a useless endeavor for the time being but if I were in the MMOG business I would certainly keep track of it, especially since Maddox is consulting on an RTS based on the IL2 engine.

If I were a dreamer I could imagine, in the distant future, these two combined into a WWII Online sim that actually works.

It ain't Aces High but it is an excellent piece of work that flightsimmers, be they MMOG online, regular online satisfied with smaller arenas or offline players, should wish well.

It raises the bar.

I like everything but the Flight Model, it feels like EAW on steroids to me.  Controls are very loose on my end, I think about touching the stick and the plane stalls. The sounds are awesome so are the graphics although I get crappy frame rates 25 and lower usualy around 18 or so when I'm fighting, but I'm on a p3-750 which is bairly above the min sys. requirements.

I don't see it knocking off AH or WB though. If he adds MMPOG code to it frame rates will suffer bigtime, which are already too low for me.

I don't think I'll be buying it though....

Udie, the sensitivity of the fm is of an interesting subject. Of course I know you have probably already lowered the joystick curve in setup...

For one, the P39 was an extrememly sensitive aircraft to fly. The rollrate is too high in the current demo and Oleg knows that, which it has been fixed in the current betas.

But the light controls of the P39 is right on.

Now the 109g2, that is a different matter.  IMO the rollrate is too high. Hopefully this has been toned down a bit to reflect AVERAGE strength plots, versus the superhuman pilots who are seemingly at the controls of the 109g2.

Good gawd they must be exerting 120 lbs of lateral force to get that 109g2 to roll like that at high speeds...

I played it quite a bit for about a week. It doesnt hold my intrest anymore. For one thing I have to turn off too much eye candy to get playable frame rates.

Maby by the time it hits the shelves ill have a better system.

Been flying the P-39 a lot, since it needs special care when flying(the LaGG-3 and La-5FN are easy to fly - as they should be).  Also, the 37mm cannon is fierce.  Downing a 109G-2 AI ace after a coalt merge has been a challenge, especially with the more aggressive AI coding in the latest beta.  In fact, with the exception of being slightly more cautious at low level, a 109G-2 AI ace flies much like a human - very aggressive, quick in the scissors, knows when it's okay to zoom with a nearby opponent.  I know this, because I've already fought(and flown) the G-2 in online bouts with squaddies.

As for this game replacing AH or WB, I don't believe it was ever meant to.  What this game did was fill in a niche that has been missing in flight sims since the beginning: the air war on the Russian Front.  Anyway, my opinion of MMP games has changed in the last year, and something like il2 is more preferable now.
