Can TrackIR3 kill mobo?
« on: July 21, 2006, 04:00:02 PM »
Ok, so I had terible problems with my old PC 2 months agoo.

Mobo and PSU died got a new one, and new mobo died.

Got a secondhand mobo, it worked for a week or so, outside the box. Just had the mobo on the desk while testing stuff (including AH2).

Well the day I installed the PC into the old case (was waiting for beter PSU) it hapend again. Mobo dead :(

Now I got paranoid, and decided to buy all new PC and throw away all that was connected to the old PC.

Well new PC works great now, and AH2 works great on it.

So now I wonder, should I risk connecting the Track IR 3 to the USB port. What if that is the component that killed my 3 mother boards? Is that even possible?

It is an USB device, with no external posewer. I do not belive it can be the guilty one, but I am no engener, and I would go beserk if my new PC dies on me also !

I am planning to buy new pedals, will not risk those. Maybe I am beter off  buying a new TIR also?

Its HIGHLY unlikely that a defective UNPOWERED USB device could damage your mobo to the extent you describe.  Its very possible (although unlikely) it could kill the UBS port, or even the controller chip for that series of ports.  Again that is unlikely but it is possible.  Destroy your motherboard though....I cant see that happening.

Far more likely that a Drive or Fan is causing a voltage issue, or even that you got a bad replacement PSU.

Ok, I go ahead and install it then. I also think its very strange if tir was the failing part ...
