CPU overheating
« on: July 23, 2006, 04:11:50 PM »
OK.... Anyone else start having cpu overheating problems immediately after the last big patch???
gigabyte k8ns pro
amd athelon 64    3100+
1 gig of ram
nvidia geforce 5200 128mb video

It aint a super computer but it had no problems before last patch (big). Always run between 45-60fps. While pc is running temp usually around 42 degrees c. Load aces high temp climbs fast to 85-90 then shuts down. MB, cpu and all fans are clean (no dust). Running any other software does NOT have the same result. Any help would be appreciated....

Thanks,
    Puck

Aces High II, or any good flight simulator, is always going to heat the CPU and video card GPU up more than other software.  It is due to the extreme amount of floating point math required to handle flight simulation.

It is not unusual for CPU's to progressively get hotter and hotter with age.  The primary reason is the contact between the CPU and the heat sink.  Overtime, the thermal pad/paste loses its ability to flow correctly, esssentially drying out and causing progressively worse thermal transfer from the CPU to the heat sink.

Removing the heat sink and thorouhgly cleaning the CPU and heat sink contact area (isopropyl alcohol is good for most instances), then applying a fresh coat of quality thermal paste will normally restore the performance of the heat sink.

The above is pretty general.  There could be a lot of other things, such as clogged air intakes on the case, fans not rotating as fast as they used to (they will do this as they age), and so on.

You should definitely check your heatsink-CPU contact.  Also it is a BAD idea to put the thermal paste on with your finger, as oils from your skin will contaminate the paste.  Think thin, with thermal paste, more is not better.
