I absolutely love the engine cowling. It looks great!

The only thing I'm not too sure about is the exhaust stains from the engines. They seem too... big. From most of the photos Ive seen, the exhaust is more streamlined than just a big black puff. But, I could be wrong.

Either way, it looks great!

The engines weren't mounted on the mid point of the wing, they were slung underneath, so the actual exhaust over the top would be narrower, due to only the top cowl flaps being over the top of the wing. There would be a puff or two on the leading edge on either side of the engine, but most would be underneath, on the nacelle itself. (/guessing)

No so sure Krusty. Tough to find a photo to illustrate it, but these two seem to show the exhaust staining on the top similar to what Kev's attempting to show.

My guess was wrong, then!

Interestingly, it looks like it starts pretty narrow, then fans out to twice as wide at the trailing edge. Interesting what airflow can do, eh?

Well, hold on Krusty. I googled B24J and checked images. There were quite a few shots. Most (not all) tend to support what you said. Exhaust staining being rather light on the upper side of the wing, with most of it being along the bottom of the nacel. Some aircraft had alot of staining on the upper wing but not many. Maybe these are oil stains coming out from the upper cowl flaps.

I think the lack of staining speaks more to the newness of the aircraft then anything else. There just weren't that many 100 mission bombers out there as attrition for any number of reasons was high. Most of the photos in my stuff show fairly new shiny planes with little exhaust staining.

It's the few old timers that show up every so often with the dirty appearance. I sometimes think we overdo it on beating up the skins as those birds weren't made for long service lives but were wrung out and replaced fairly frequently.
