The Red Baron (new Movie 2007)

The Red Baron stars Matthias Schweighöfer as the titular hero, with Lena Headey as
his love interest and Til Schweiger as Richthofen's flying buddy. Joseph Fiennes
is going up against German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen in writer-director
Niki Müllerschön's historical epic The Red Baron. Fiennes will play Roy Brown, the
Canadian pilot credited with shooting down the german top gun in 1918 during the
final months of World War I. The German production, which recounts von Richthofen's
career as World War I's most celebrated flyer, is shooting in Prague & Germany.

The Movie will come 2007 to a Theatre new you.

I love the Airplanes from that Time, finaly a new WWI Movie! :)

Sounds cool.  I wonder how they'll treat the controversy over who fired the bullet that killed him though.

A bigger controversy sorounds who really shot down the most planes. Some of his so called kills happened while he was resting or on vacation. There are some great books out there to read and the most fascinating is about a guy called mick mannock. Some reports credit it him with shooting down 1 less than the red baron. Allies had to get hard evidence for a kill and most times the germans stayed close to their lines and could glide home.  If you couldnt find the wreckage...no kill.On more than 1 occassion ( from a book by Ira Jones who flew with him ) Mannock apparently shot up planes then let rookies finish them or gave away kills. I tried to read as much as I could about this guy. Its real interesting he walked with a limp amd was almost blind in one eye. The germans stopped him when he was travelling back to England at the beggining of the war but released him due to his ailments. Apparently he hated chivalry and all the notions of knights in the air. He just tried to kill as many as he could any way possible, This bought him in trouble with everyone around him. Most times towards the end  he just went out alone. His high commands hands were tied as he had so many kills. No one knows exactly how he died but after the war his grave was found at a french village. The villagers said that he dived in to attack a formation of german fighters and shot some down before being killed. If the numbers are accurate that would make him the highest ace. Personally I think those guys were so brave and gifted I dont think it matters. I only mention this here as I think his story would be a great film. This guy was a real legend and I doubt more than a handfull know his name. Strange that as allies we only remember the baron lol.

Too bad this movie's been listed on IMDB for being "In Production" for something like 3 years now.

Rgr that... I loved reading about the air war of these times it was much more personal.Alot of what is done to day originates from that era. In fact these guys were so interesting that they could probably make a mini seriers and get a good following audience. I only met ww2 aces but even they saluted the guys from ww1...at the beginning parachutes although invented werent allowed to be carried as it was thought they would induce cowardice lol. I was always fascinated by ww1 air combat.

really? didnt knew that,
they where talking about this movie yesterday on a radio station,
the production is running right now, and it is the most expensive
movie ever made in germany. They build the Airplane models 1:1 , they look
absolute like the real thing, cept they cant fly ;)
All aircombat scenes are done CGI.

I've read some autobiographies by World War 1 pilots, interesting stuff.

This one French pilot, he was an instructor.  Since planes had a tendency to catch on fire when hit, he instructed his pilots *not* to jump out if their planes caught on fire (parachutes were not standard equipment for Allied pilots).  He told them to slip, dive, do anything to get the flames to blow away from the cockpit.

Well, the day came when this French pilot was in a dogfight and his plane caught fire.  The author of the book (James McCudden), who was a good friend of this pilot, watched in amazement from his S.E.5 (oddly enough, not an SE5a) as the Frenchman lept to his death after only a second or two of flames.  

I thought that was just an interesting story that really illustrated the brutality of WW1 air combat.

Sounds like Raoul Lufberry. I'm pretty sure of it.

lol that is great.

the pilots of WW1 and WW2 where all great men. with balls of steal in my eyes. dog fighting is a nobal art. not like today. killing an enemy pilot from 5+ miles away with a fire and forget rocket ect.

in them days it was the airial version of sword fighting.
