Taking one year off from work.
« on: July 27, 2006, 06:26:31 AM »
Starting August 1. ill take one year off from my job at the family business. My dad is taking over my tasks for that year. He has been semi-retired for 2 years but wants got get back in as he feels he has too much spare time.

For the next year we will be living off my wifes job and I will take a serious approach to daytrading before I get too stuck in my regular job and before its too late to take a risk. Ive been trading for some months now and made good money in both ups and downs. I have spent so much time watching the market that I had to make a step one way or another.  My wife and I have faith in me, and all our savings are on the line.

Scary and exciting at the same time. So many have lost so much and so few have really made a good living from this. Im not in it to get rich in a hurry, but to match what I make now (or more if i can) at the end of the year.

I need all the "luck" you can blow my way :)

everyone keeps asking me that... i have no good answer :D

I make sure the puters run, translate drawings to the pc so they can load them to the milling machines, pay the bills, keep in touch with customers, send bills to our customers, order what we need... etc..

Anything except taking customer orders, make the products and answer the phones.

I guess you culd say im a mix between the useless brother and the father in that OCC show.

Not sure.

Im not to much into that stuff. Its a program that came with the machines. Those that work with them use direct input when they get an order, but the programs are saved on floppys incase they get similar orders again. I use a program that is pretty basic for transfering older drawings (pre computer controlled machines) by just inputting the numbers. If i really wanted to I guess i could make my own programmes froms scratch but thats not my field... thats why those that do the work down on the floor also takes the ordres. They are the pros.

The machines on the floor all have ethernet jacks so the plan is to some day connect them directly to a server in the office. That way they can sit on a workstation and make/edit/get the drawings and then send them to the machines via ethernet. For now they are made using the little keyboard and screen on the machines. Its one of those projects that just seems to get put off cause they are always up tho their necks in work. They really like it the old way, and to get them to use computers is a nightmare.

Most of the work is done on older manual machines tho and that is were their huge experience and feel really comesinto play. The computer controlled machines are usually only used for makein alot of the same things.

Nilsen,
What kind of machine shop type work to you do?

We have an plant in Belgium that requires machined parts.

Maybe we can use some of your ice bear made parts.

PM me and let me know.

The guys are full up as usual and have to turn down orders almost daily. They do everything within a realsonable size. The main man just finished a private project he has been working on for a few months (after hours). Its a perfect scaled down version of a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 used by spits. It works great and even makes the right sound.. It about 75 cm long and the detail is just amazing. Even the metals used are like the original. I will take a pic or maybe a vid of it if i remember it one of these days. Its freestanding and he is not going to mount it in anything... he just did it for fun. Like most of his little projects he will prolly sell it and make some other engine.. We have a few steam engines standing in the office thats made in various metals.

Over the years they have made everyting you can imagine from old steam engine parts to bits for the military and old warbirds.

The place has been shut down for a couple of weeks due to vacation (every year we shot down for that in july) and the orders have been piling up as usual so they will be working overtime until september with what they have now.

If its something specific you had in mind then let me know and ill ask them.
