England's 5-1 win to be made into film epic
« on: September 10, 2001, 11:52:00 AM »
Here's the film version:
"Universal Pictures announced today they plan to make a film of the momentous football match that took place on Saturday 2nd September 2001.

"Five-One" is the tentative title of what could be next year's big summer hit, depicting the American national soccer team's stunning victory over Germany.

Nicholas Cage heads an all star cast as the captain of the brave US Soccer team haunted by the trauma of losing in the 2000 World Cup final on penalties and the death of his wife in a riot caused by English football hooligans, and finds love in the arms of a female sports journalist played by Julia Roberts. Mel Gibson is the no-nonsense Swedish coach who leads them to glory, with Keanu Reeves, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Will Smith playing some of Cage's heroic team mates. Jeremy Irons is set to star as Sir Nigel Villiers-Smythe, the dastardly Englishman who coaches the German team and forces them to play with poisoned-tipped studs to try and cheat the heroic American team out of victory.

Director Steven Spielberg defended the film-makers' decision to focus on the American contribution to the victory over Germany and inaccurate and even imagined events in the story, saying, "Obviously we've had to take some artistic licence to make the story work on film, but I hope that what we produce will be true to the spirit of what actually happened on that famous night."

ROFL!!  but that'd never fly here as all Americans think we suck at soccer.  Of course if you made it the Women's team had some hot actress play Brandi Chastain and have her pull her jersey off, then it'd draw $250 million easy.   ;)

as a side note, how did SPR depict the Americans winning the war single handedly against Germany?  It only depicted the landing at Omaha Beach (which only Americans landed at if I'm not mistaken, 5 beaches were hit on D-Day, 3 by American forces and 2 by UK Commonwealth forces) and then a group of men trying to find a person in the 101st Airborne which had been scattered on their drop.  Just being curious as to how you saw that differently.   :)

Nifty - I believe snafu is getting at that U-boat/Enigma traversty or that 'The Patriot' bollocks with a healthy dose of that 'Braveheart' crap.

The usual anti-English Hollywood bias when it comes to history involving...err... the English.

If the Welsh, Irish or Scottish were depicted in the same light there'd be an apoplexy of PC rage.  ;)

oooooooohhhhhh...  hehe, when he said Spielberg I just assumed he was referring to SPR.  Never saw The Patriot myself.

Besides it's not our fault we grow up hating British accents.  George Lucas showed us that the Evil Empire's military is made up of British accents.   ;)

yeah all you americans seem to delight in portraying the English as dastardly villians, but i guess thats because most of us who move out to america ARE  :)

so what if we are always playing villians?

Rather THAT than BLOODY CHIMNEY SWEEPS saying crap like 'cor blimey guv'nor' and 'up the ol' apple and pears'.

We all know the dumb yanks didnt crack the enigma or steal the machine off the submarine. We DO know however, that they can make a REAAAAALLLY bad submarine film CLAIMING they did, whilst STEALING the whole gritty submarine idea DONE SUPERBLY in Das BOOT they just kept showing ben aflek looking gritty and shook the camera like they did in star trek.

WHAT A PILE OF toejamE THAT FILM WAS.

U-571?

U-bunch a bananas more like  :)

Hehe - Star Trek :D I've always found it confusing when those cameras shook in one shot ("...shields down 20%... yaddi-yaddi-yaddah") an in the next shot the whole ship accelerates from 0 to (I presume very fast) Warp 9 and no-one gets spluttered against the bulkheads. Surely it's either one or the other? Or is it Hollywood physics? :D

p.s. GF brought home The Enemy at the Gates from Blockbusters - what a pile of goo... SPR/FMJ/Platoon - the rest are pale imitations.

Enertial Dampers Lynx,
Stops the effect of G forces  :) So you don't get thrown against the bulkhead.
