The perils of Vintage Planes (One less P-51 in the world)
« on: September 10, 2001, 05:55:00 PM »
SCRATCH ONE P-51: Glamorous Glen III, the famous P-51 Mustang flown by
Chuck Yeager at air shows nationwide, crashed on September 6 near
Lincolnton, N.C.  Yeager was not in the aircraft at the time of the
accident.  The WWII-era fighter's engine seized after losing its
coolant near the Lincoln County Airport.  Pilots Jeff Michael and Butch
Cauble knew that an engine failure was imminent, removed the canopy and
unfastened their seatbelts before being flipped over and dumped out
below 1,500 feet as the aircraft's engine seized.  Both men received
only minor injuries thanks to "good chutes."  Obviously, the aircraft
was destroyed.

You realize they are building all new FW-190's, Me-262's, F3F's, Yak 3's and more from plans, right?

Yeah, it's sad to lose one but I'd much rather see them flying than gathering dust in a museum.

Didn't lose the pilots. There's the bright side.

Probably the toughest thing is going to be engines. A lot of substitution going on in that area already due to scarcity.

Of course, if the desire and the money is there, there would eventually be new Packard Merlins.
