Rip made a post and commented that some of the cheaper BMW's in the US come in at around $27 000.

Now, a BMW 318 stationcar cost a little over $52 000 in Denmark. When I get my degree and get a job, that's what I'm willing to pay for a car.

Seems cars are almost twice as expensive here. PERHAPS it is possible, if one lives in the US with a reasonable income, for a normal dude like me to get a Viper?

I'm single, got no kids, don't plan on having one. Got some hobbies that are relatively expensive, but if I can manage them on the money I have now, that won't be a problem.

I'm used to living in places that are claustrophobic to most: where neighbors are drug users and ex cons, and the ones over me constantly have sex, with their bed being pushed up the radiator so the sounds transmit very well directly down to my pillow. That radiator is binary btw: fully off or fully on.

What I'm saying is that I ain't scared of living like crap, if that means I can get a Viper. Screw Porsche: the Viper is a car that in real life is the equivalent of a FW: nasty looking bastard.

Must study now. Must get my preciousss.

So you are willing to be "living like crap" just to be able to afford that car. That means sex at your place is out. The Viper itself is one of the least convenient cars to have sex in.
So what the heck is a point of having a noodle-car, other then spoiling a game for everybody else who can really afford it?

There was a point of legally regulating the public image the people could project. If you saw a guy wearing purple in ancient Rome or a spanish guy in middle ages sporting six names, a lady could be sure his appartment is not a dump.

But actions of show-offs like you make the really affluent people spend enormous sums on impractical Ferraris and other crap to impress a girl because every one is driving premium cars now.

BTW, my friend who is not yet 25 is paying about $14,000 a year for insurance of his BMW that was worth a bit over $40,000. I am sure that the cost of insurance on much less concervative Viper is higher.
So forgoing appartment may not be enough. You may need to go without food too...

Of course that is for a 2001, so the 2002 may be slightly different

The one thing that totally floored me in Denmark was the cost of "luxury" cars. The volvo wagons were going for about $200,000. Simply amazing.

And StSanta.. why are you asking this crowd? You don't know how to look up cars on the net? Or did you think a few of us owned a viper?

everytime i go to europe every third car is a bmw or mercedes.

even the taxis...also everyone seems to have a huge house or apartment.

Even a poorer country like Croatia has E-Class Mercedes Sedans as TAXIS! I swear I saw more S-Class Mercedes, even the big V12 engine ones, in Zagreb than I do around here in the rich bellybutton Bay Area.

First of all, Mercedes and BMW make available lesser models in Europe that arent sold here. This protects the exclusive image of the cars here. The Mercedes that are used as taxis in Germany arent decked out nearly so much as the C and E class sedans that you see in the US. They only come one way here, loaded out. BMW doesnt even sell a 4 cylinder 3 series here anymore or a diesal.

Secondly, you can pick up a used Viper here in the States for $40,000 any time. Look in any Dupont Register and you will see numerous Vipers in excellent shape for $40k.

About the cars in Croatia, I have never been there, but I have a friend who is from Montenegro and he told me that there are lots of really nice cars there. I was talking how I wanted a BMW M3 and he said that you could get them easily over there, the Euro model too, not the slower model that they sold here for so long.

The reason you arent seeing as many S class MB in the bay area, grunherz, is because all the rich people out there are driving around in Cadillac Escalades and Hummers, or so it seemed to me when I was there!

Nissan Micra 1.0, prolly the cheapest new car in Finland is yours with 13,000 euros.
Cheapest 5 door cars cost about 20,000 euros (they are stripped totally, no electric windows etc.).

Our import taxes on cars are laddered so, that the more hp/kg the car has, bigger the tax. Oh and EVERY added feature in the car, including airbag is taxed separately. Thats why its very rare to have air conditioned car in here. No wonder why Finland has the oldest cars in use of the whole EU (average 10 years!), regular people cant afford to buy new cars.
I think its sick to force people to buy very old cars, ESPECIALLY in these latitudes with cold and slippery winters. And guess what, theyre planning to drop overall speed limits with 10kmh, because politicians are concerned about traffic death tolls! Yeah right.

Start rejoicing then, Tuomio, and come buy a car in Spain... a BMW M3 is around 50k € (euros), and there shouldn't be any additional tax to pay since the VAT is already accounted for in the price.

That's going to happen a lot in the eurozone, I guess.

I just downloaded the mp3 file for my Clie...gonna listen to it again now and have the office look at me weird for the rest of the day....way too much headbanging required while at work...but it is such a GREAT song.
