I already posted about the accident and the story behind it but here are the pics of my car.

remember i was hit in the drivers door just forward of center at a speed between 40-50mph......

absolutely incredible how little damage was sustained.

you can clearly see the impact bar running right down the length of the door, standing proud from the rest of the door panel.

from the internal shot you can see how close the door came to my hand on the wheel, and also how the impact has dislodged all the inserts from the vents to the speedo and radio.

I am incredibly lucky to be alive and well after this one.

The girl who hit me came back very early the next day (we crashed at 2am) and removed her car so i couldnt get a photo, but i will tell you that it was totaly destroyed.

her left wing was doubled back right into the passenger seat, and the engine and front axle totaly irrepairable.

so i ask the question, would you feel safe letting your kids drive a car that did not have such effective saftey features?

:huh

I wouldn't want my family in such a tiny tin can as that.  It's no wonder you're so surprised and happy to be alive.

What was it that hit you?

Is that a Mondeo or a Falcon?  It appears to be an Escort to me, but I cannot remember if that was sold in Britain.

At least you guys (and sister) are safe.  All that matters.

thanks mash, and you are of course correct about the most important bit.

my car was a ford fiesta zetec. a late 90s model with a few mods to the skirting and bumpers, and with very wide tires  (i hate the really thin ones, like motobike tires on some cars)

funny thing is, had i been hit by a bigger car, i would be in trouble.

thats why your statement makes little sense JAB.

big cars need other big cars to make collisions safer.

if we all drove smaller cars it would be just as safe.

if a big chevy had hit me at 40mph, i would be most definitely dead.

True.  I know we've had our go arounds, but humanity should never be questioned.

LOL! I must be tired.

The first time I read that I thought it said: "thankfully it was a Nilsen Micra that hit me." LOL

yup those Nilsens are a real hazard on the road :D

another stupid part, if you can see the two cracks in the windscreen.....

....after the crash sitting in my seat still, i got a moment of rage at what had happened and punched both hands forwards and cracked those bits.

therefoer the only injury i sustained was sore knuckles.

That's exactly why I wouldn't want to drive a tin can such as yours.  You can't control what hits you, only what you drive.  If we all drove small cars, the road would still be full of pickup trucks and commerical vehicles.

I'm glad you're okay, and you should be thankful you didn't get hit by something bigger.  Perhaps give that some thought when you buy a replacement vehicle.

GM cars have had guard beams in the doors for decades.

Not to hijack the thread, but to support JAB's point.  Here's my son's car that was hit by a Jeep Cherokee.  My 21 year old son and 15 year old youngest daughter died in it a year ago August 28th.  I don't know that anything would have made a difference but it was one of those smaller cars JAB refers to.
