Cast Away ending?

Ok, what the hell is up with this ending?  I've been meaning to ask and just watched it again and still think the ending is horrid.  Are we just supposed to assume that he went back down the road to tag that cute little country girl?  Cant be THAT simple can it?  :D

I always thought the ending was weak too.  But the movie is already 2h 20min long, I don't know how much dialog between Hanks and the woman I could have endured.

I would have much rather seen more footage of his character getting used to civilization again after being away for years.  "I have ice in my glass" just doesn't cut it.   :D

The ending to me meant "we are given many crossroads in life, and which we choose is the journey we commit to, a destination it will never be."

whole movie sucked.
Having read "The Mysterious Island" by Verne, i had really high expecations. This move really disappointed....

Was there ANY movie released in last 3 years without sorry bellybutton romance in it ?

The crossroads at the end was supposed to represent choices.  Maybe he decides to go back and hook up with the lady whose package he delivered.  Or maybe he goes the opposite way... or this way... or that way.  The key is that it is finally his choice where he goes and what he does.

Contrast this to life on the island, where he specifically stated that choice has been stripped of him by necessity.  His life became a routine geared toward survival, and when he decided to commit suicide, he found that even the manner in which he'd chosen to die was unavailable to him.

LOL, Leviathan seems to have had his blue book ready to "compare and contrast". That may be too obscure a refrence. Do they still use blue books?

Anyway the ending left me cold as well. Most of the messages in the movie were very visceral. Then ending with this trite "crossroads" was obvious to a fault and left me thinking the writers ran out of ideas.

The ending was painfully obvious, a poor pun, and pretentious. The movie itself was not a shining moment for Hanks. If I might venture my own pun, the move should have been "Cast Away".

BTW, you do know that "Cast Away" in itself is a pun? The proper spelling for someone shipwrecked is "Castaway". The title suggests throwing away, or "casting away" something... perhaps an old life?

I saw this with my father in law, and we both agreed that a much more interesting movie would've been half as much on the island, and twice as much after he returns from the island...  the ending was decent, if tired.

Blackhawk Down had some "romance" in the book.  Some of the soldiers were having a torrid affair with Rosie Palm.
