Op system question
« on: August 10, 2006, 07:01:31 AM »
I'm pretty sure this won't work but I figured I'd go ahead and ask. I still need to get windows for my new PC. My friend has a windows XP "upgrade" disk that he's willing to give me. We were debating whether it would work as a stand alone product? I get the feeling that you have to have Win98 or ME installed 1st but he said you might get away with using just this version. Anyone know which is correct? If it does take an old windows, anyone got one they'd be willing to part with?

I can't say for sure with XP. But long ago & far away I "fooled" Windows upgrade. When it asked where win 95 was that I was upgrading from. I just popped in the old win 95 disk, pointed it to the .exe, then switched it back out to the install disk.

If that DOESN"T work, give me a shout.

i don't think you actually have to have an older windows version installed. think it will just ask you for a ME or WIN 98 installation disk to verify that you own a prior version.

Go here:  http://www.bootdisk.com

Pay the couple bucks for the utilities, and read the guys instructions for doing what you need to do with the 'upgrade' disk, which is essentially a WInXP install CD that is not bootable if i recall correctly.

Essentially, you copy Win98 setup files to your HDD to get things rolling, then install XP on top of it.

Ive done it a few times on my machine after wiping and writing 0's to the disk.

A great free OS, that using WINE will probably run AH:

I'd skip the upgrade path, find most ANY XP CD and create a bootable copy with all the patches slipstreamed in.

Haven't had a chance to try anything b/c.... I've run into another problem:

When I start up my PC I get it to come on for just a second or so. Actually it's more complicated than that. Sometimes I can get it to stay on for a minute and some times I can keep it on till I turn it off. I think I have a loose cord. It's the cord that controls the power button itself, it's marked "PLEAD" and I think supplies power to the motherboard or something to that effect. What makes me think this is when I can't get the PC to fire up I unplug that cord, reinsert it and the PC will come on for a bit before starting over. Plus that cord is real wobbley. Is there any type of glue or tape that I can use to make a firm connection? Also I considered sodering(I can do it, just not spell it:D). I think that would be to messy though as the cord is covered with a plastic cap that plugs into my mobo. I'll tell ya what, you sure save money DIYin it, but it can be a lot of headaches!

Dont worry about the Xp upgrade disk , just make sure you have a win 95,98, ME , or 2000 disk handy , the upgrade disk is bootable and will just ask you to insert the older OS disk and then carry on with the install.

Make sure that your heatsink is properly seated , sometimes the motherboard will shut down the system if the cpu is getting too hot . One of the times it stays running hop into the bios and check the hardware monitor and make sure . GL   38
