Him, a few other Green Berets and twenty something Afgans were investigating a report by local civilians that Al Queda fighters were nearby.  They flew in on helicopters and checked around.

Somehow a firefight broke out and a 14 year old boy shot him dead.  A CIA man was wounded, and some of the friendly Afgans were wounded too, none of them seriously.

The tribal elders in that area conveyned a Loya Jirga meeting to see if they should hand over the boy, but it sounds like it doesn't matter anyways.  He skeedadled over the border to Pakistan, thru that impregnable border that Osama could never cross.

Hans.

Gee, I wonder where Osama could be?

CHapman lived about 10 miles from me in Pyuallup, Wa.  His wife and two very young children survive him.  Bank of America has a fund set up for the Chapman family, if you'd like to donate just drop into any Bank of America and ask them about the Chapman fund in Washington state and you can make a donation.

Disclaimer: I don't mean to cheapen the man's death in any way by the following comments.

While it is sad that this soldier was killed by the enemy, it is heartening to note that the death of a single soldier can be such big news, simply because it is such a rarity.  That, if not the total collapse of the Taliban, is testament enough to the effectiveness and training of our troops over there.

First of all, Bash there is nothing funny about this thread and second you are a love muffin if you think the N. Alliance has done "All" of the ground work. Remember who is walking, fighting and dying with the N. Alliance everyday from the beginning - our troops! If you think Nate Chapman did nothing then you are truly an idiot. Tomorrow we will bury an American Hero, tell Mrs. Chapman and her two children that we didn't do any of the ground work. I hugged Nate Chapman's Mother tuesday after we took her son's casket off the aircraft - tell her who did "all" of the work!
