The "American Soldier death reports" from Afghanistan

History repeats itself.

Its a bug that hit me early on.  I don't like the in-depth coverage of a soldier's death we are currently seeing.

I don't think its something that should be hidden... but I don't like the sensationalism that goes with it right now.  Someone's not a hero because they died... they are a hero because they went over there.

What did you expect.  It didn't snow here this year, so they weren't able to plaster the news on TV, 24 hours a day to cover "SNOW STORM 2002!"

"tina, what are you seeing out there?"
"Well Brenda, it's just, umm just cold out here, there's umm ice, and cars are having problems getting traction."
"incredible Tina, thanks for the shocking update...now to Jeff at one of the local tire shops who are busier than normal, catering to citizens protecting themselves against this foul weather by having studded tires installed"
"well Brenda, just amazing, this tire shop is really, really busy.  People are getting studded tires put on their vehicles.  Some already owned them and just needed them installed; some, are purchasing them new today.  Just shocking, back to you Brenda"

They need something to put on the news and it has to be death, danger or sex.  I'm sure we'll soon be hearing from the soldier's girldfriend from jr high, right after they shove a mic into the face of his grieving grandma.

Its better than earlier this summer when the headlines were one of President Bush's daughters drinking under age.

That was a shocker all right.  I couldn't sleep knowing a twenty year old girl away from her parents is actually drinking alcohol.  Oh, God...the horror.

At least this man deserves the attention.

CHapman lived about 10 miles from me in Pyuallup, Wa. His wife and two very young children survive him. Bank of America has a fund set up for the Chapman family, if you'd like to donate just drop into any Bank of America and ask them about the Chapman fund in Washington state and you can make a donation.

It's pretty amazing to me that so far casualties in the US Forces have been so light. For that I am thankful.

I think for that reason, each one gets a lot more attention than casualties would in a war with much greater attrition.

Whatever one makes of that would be an individual evaluation.

I've decided to make a contribution to the college fund, knowing I could not do so for each and every one were the circumstances more like (for example) VietNam.

I CAN do this... and I will. As this decades long struggle continues, I'll also continue to do things that I can do.

I called BOA and verified that this is a valid account number and project.

Info on College Fund

"A college fund has been established for the children. Donors can go to any branch of Bank of America or send a check to:

Sgt. Nathan Chapman Children's Memorial Fund Bank of America P.O. Box 620020 Dallas, TX 75262-0020 (Note on the check that it's for Account 005772951233.)

The Associated Press contributed to this report."
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!
