U.S. army deserter says he'll return to face charges
« on: August 05, 2006, 12:17:23 PM »
A U.S. army deserter who has been living in Toronto for the past two years says he plans to go home and turn himself in next month.

Darrell Anderson, who is legally entitled to stay in Canada, said Friday that he wants to return to the United States to draw attention to war crimes allegedly committed by American soldiers in Iraq.

"I know people that killed prisoners. I know people that killed innocent people. I was ordered to kill innocent people," Anderson told CNN.

He claims he was once ordered to fire on a car filled with innocent civilians when it pulled up to a roadblock. He said he refused, and was later told he did the wrong thing.

Anderson served seven months on the front lines of Baghdad and Najaf, and was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded by shrapnel.

If he had done another tour in Iraq, Anderson says, he believes he would have committed war crimes himself. "It's the evil that builds inside you," he said.

While home on leave, Anderson fled to Toronto. He got a job and got married to a Canadian, giving him the legal right to stay in Canada.

However, he now says he will surrender to the U.S. military in September. Anderson said he hopes the army will be lenient and consider his record as a soldier and the fact he was wounded.

He also thinks the timing is right to return because of growing anti-war sentiment in the U.S., and because charges have now been laid against American troops who allegedly killed Iraqi civilians.

"I should have done something in Iraq. I should have done something when I got back," he said.

"You can't call me a coward because I fought in the war. You can't call me a coward now because I'm going to prison."

What do you think the US military will do with this guy?

I wouldn't call him a coward. I'd call him a deserter.

I expect he'll get a trial under the UCMJ.

Now if he had deserted A-Q or Hez, I'd expect him to be beheaded.

He is a volunteer and a deserter.  Court martial him and give him the standard punishment.  I recommend he stay in canada with the others.

Keep him, he's just homesick. He made his bed he can stay in it. If he comes back I hope he likes laboring in Kansas for a long long time then he can go back to Canada without his American citizenship.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I think his story shows more than a little self deception and self justification. I would never criticise a combat veteran, least of all someone who was wounded. I wouldn't use the word coward either. But I think he needs to acknowledge the real reason he didn't want to go back. He couldn't face it again. His fear was greater than his sense of duty. Simple as that. Everyone has their limits and he reached his. I wouldn't blame him for that. I have no right to. I was never in that situation.

Throwing in red herrings about war crimes and jumping on the anti war bandwagon is common.  People always need to justify their actions, put them in a more flattering light. But he knows the truth in his heart of hearts.

I do find it interesting though that he would rather go to jail than continue to live in Canada. I mean Canada is not that bad:D

This just shows that night after night of endless Kraft dinner is a fate worse than  prison.

He's making the same mistake many others have and do, that the rhetoric from the left is any more than just that. He believes his actions will be justified by this rhetoric and that the left will rescue him from his fate. Maybe they'll let him have a blog at Leavenworth. Probably not.

My brother is a canadian citizen who fled the vietnam draft.

He worked extremely hard under harsh conditions and was constantly looking over his shoulder for many years till he got his legal citizenship.

most are not cut out for it.   It is too difficult.  Most of those he knew if not all of those he knew who had done the same thing.... all ended up back in the U.S.

Did you ever serve in the Military Lazs1?
