Are you looking to have someone actually capture from the AHF files or just compress an existing uncompressed AVI?

You are aware that you can get the non-pro version of vegas, called Sony vegas DVD studio (or similar) for under $100......sometimes on sale for around $69.  Its very capable.

Devilm:

The DIVX or XVID mpeg4 encoding does a great job with producing higher video quality than the wmv.  The good news is that you don't need Vegas to do it :).  You can do it for FREE using VirtualDub.

Here's the general process:

(1) Use Windows Movie Maker to edit your video (e.g. arrange clips, trim clips, add sounds, music, etc.).
(2) Publish the movie as a complete uncompressed .AVI file using WMM.
(3) Load the .AVI into VirtualDub
(4) Encode the movie using the divx or xvid encoding in VirtualDub

The end result is that you will get a .AVI that is divx/xvid encoded.  Of course you'll need the divx/xvid codecs for whatever media player you are using to play the movies but these are pretty standard to get from the Net.

Some key notes:

(1) You'll have to learn how to use VirtualDub.  It's a really good tool and to use it for the above is pretty straightforward.

(2) You'll have to load up the divx/xvid codecs for VirtualDub to use for encoding.  When you download the divx/xvid codecs they should install and be automatically available for VirtualDub.

(3) You'll have to learn how to set the divx/xvid encoding parameters to get the optimum image quality vs. file size etc.  It's pretty technical.  I'll see if I can dig up some links on tips for the right settings.  It makes a big difference.

Here are some guides regarding divx codec settings...

Here's a quote from another forum:

chose 'divx' as you have done in the screenshot. press 'configure to see the configuration-menu of the codec. there is lotsa possibilities to test (the 'divx'-site has some good manuals explaining the stuff). the compression normally should be done with your very final movie, also compressing in 2 passes gives best results. for now chose '1-pass', keep the 'profiles' and the 'speed' at standard and set a bitrate for general quality/size ratio (just try '850kbs' for 640x480 for example). under the 'video'-tab you may change 'scene-detection' to '65%' (don't go higher) and close the configuration by clickin 'ok'. close the 'compression'-menu in 'vdub' also by 'ok', make sure that 'video -> full processing mode' is checked and start the dubbing/compression by 'file -> save as avi...', chose a location and give the video a different name (!). press 'save' and watch some neat pop-up with data from the codec at work.
when done, close 'vdub' and play the compressed video to see if all is like you wished it to be.

Here's a divx codec guide using VirtualDub from the DIVX site:

Cheers!
