Game freezing only online
« on: August 12, 2006, 05:40:38 AM »
Just downloaded this game, and the high res pack. Game works flawlessly offline.

However, if I try online (8 player OR main arena) it starts off in the control tower room thing, with no textures, and 0 fps, totally locked up, can't even move my mouse.

Also, I cannot access the task bar or task manager, so I am forced to hit the restart button.

I tried changing the max FPS from "unlimited" to "60" and after exiting the menu, the game crashed and forced me to restart, and now whenever I start the game it crashes and forces me to restart. I've reinstalled the game 3 times. Please help! I'm dying to play!

My system specs:
AMD 64 X2 4200+
nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX
some sort of ASUS motherboard w/ nVidia nForce
4 GB DDR512 RAM

running @ full detail 1600x1200x32

See this link and read the section about dual core AMD CPU's.

I was having a similar problem.  I am not saying that this is, in fact, your problem, but it is something you may consider.  My computer had a problem in the BIOS with how the motherboard processed the AGP card.  On lower resolution applications or even when working offline, there was no problem. But whenever a higher detail 3D application started running...  freeze and crash to the point I had to manually shut off the computer and start it back up.

After weeks of fidling an doodling with everything (before I realized what the problem was) I simply 'flashed' my BIOS (aka updated motherboard drivers) .  Now the game works great.  I have never seen the game look so vividly.

Not saying this is your issue, but may not hurt to think about it and try it.

I solved this by installing the processor drivers and setting compatibility mode.

After you install the AMD patch for dual core CPU's, you should not need to set the Windows compatibility mode for the game.  You only need to set that if you have NOT installed the patch from AMD.

In my case, without the compatibility mode it still did not work, and in compatibility mode without the patch it did not work.

Ok, that is the first time, I am aware of, where the installation of the dual-core patch did not correct all the anomalies with the game.

It could be related to the video card driver.  NVidia's 9x.xx drivers have had some rather serious issues.  But if checking the compatibility mode option corrects the problems with the driver, then it is worth knowing about.

When you say it did not work (after the AMD patch is installed), could you elaborate?  Be as detailed as possible please.  Thank you.

Basically, before I had made any effort to fix it, the menu was grey and kept flickering colors and such. Game did not work online.

Compability mode fixed menu flickering and it was now proper manilla color, but online still did not work.

Then AMD patch made it all work. I tried disabling compatiblity mode, and it went back to not working (flickering menu and broken online)
