I was given an old Levi's Edition rear seat.   A gentleman in the Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Assoc. has a Bestop Fold and Tumble for sale, for $100 (it was sat on 2 times).  His Booster seat will go on it.  Ian will be 5 in Sept., maybe next summer I'll start taking him wheeling.  He's just a little too young yet.   This IS a daily driver vehicle as well though (he'll be in it when I get the rear seat).

The 304 and 340 are/were made by AMC (american motors) who orriginally manufactured the Jeep before chrysler baught them.....I think.

I'm thinking of selling mine for a truck.  It just isn't too practical and I need A/C

speaking of AC, mines in the shop for that too.

The Heater/AC controll stopped working so the only thing the AC cools is the windshield lol.

But the Warrantly is covering it all so no big deal.

Can you still get parts for the old AMC V8s?

Yea 4wd.com and quadratech still supply alot of parts for the old CJs  w/ stock V-8s.  In fact I've even seen companys sell remanufactured long blocks for them as well.

my old 80 CJ5 had a 304 in it.  The thing was SHOT to say the least.  I barley got any oil pressure and it would rattle like hell at high RPMs but it kept going.  I had big plans for that jeep but was getting out of the Marines soon and it was rusted all to hell.  The only thing that could have saved it was a frame up restoration and ALOT of sheet metal work.

So why do people yank the AMC V8s and dump in Chevy motors? Just cheaper?

Whats the stock V8 make horsepower wise?

(not being a smart ass, just don't know alot about the pre TJ jeeps lol)

350's, Chevy 4.3L's and Buick 3.8L's are easier to find parts for, if in a pinch on the trail (most local shops will carry the parts).

As for HP, the 83 is probably around 120-130HP.

From what I've heard the stock 304 and 340s are crap engines compared to their Ford/Chevy/Buik counterparts.  Alot of jeep enthusiest will keep them only because it keeps the jeep more "orriginal" so to speak.

I had a '77 Wagoneer with a 403. Engine was GM built and ran fine. The quadratrac GM tranny on the other hand was a total POS.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.
