Bunt

I see a lot of guys use the bunt manuver when they start taking hits and I wonder if this would work in real life? Say a Tempest is doing 400 on the deck and someone dives in on him at 450. When the Temp hears the first hit he slams the stick forward to get out of the bullet path. Is the effect of red out right or should it last longer? I chose the Temp at random but this is pretty common and it just delays the usual outcome but feels gamey to me. Should this even be possible?

In the book The Blonde knight Of Germany, Erich Hartmann mentioned several times that it saved his arse.
