Why I take credit for SOB's id
« on: May 20, 2001, 12:55:00 PM »
I used to call Thrustmaster up and ask questions in regards to Windows compatability and all.. with 3.11, 95 and NT 4.0. TM took a while to get Windows friendly... a little too long IMO, so I'd call up tech support and give them hell. A typical conversation:

Matt: Thustmaster technical support. This is Matt. Can I help you.
Dave: Yes, for some reason the axis on my throttle and rudder pedals screw up with both devices connected, but are fine when hooked up with the throttle.
Matt: OK.. lets make sure everything is hooked up just ri... wait a minute... is this you Dave?
Dave: Why no... um... its anyone but Dave.
Matt: I told you.. we don't support NT 4.0 in any way shape or form. DirectInput will never catch on and you are just wasting your time and ours.
Dave: You SOB. I'm gonna come over there and kick your nonvissionary ass. Then I'm gonna go over to your dad's office and do the same. Then I'm gonna burn the place down!

I'd do this at least 8 times a day. I finally met with Buzz Hoffman to discuss some things and he told me an interesting story.

One day, Matt came into his office and said "Daddy, I have a customer that keeps calling me an 'SOB'. What does that mean?"

Buzz looked at him with a grin mistakingly accepted as loving by Matt and said "It means 'Son of Buzz'." Now.. run along you little SOB.

The name has forever stuck.

BTW Matt... still waiting to hit the Road House

SOB and TM?  Hehe, small world, I was the guy that sent in that fancy 3D drawing showing your engineers that the spring stem rubbing against a threaded cap screw was a no-no, and that you should go to bushings or a solid diecast...guess what, you guys took my advice, but I'm sure you'd never fess up to an end users suggestion.

Thanks for all the free sticks and such.

Hey, if it worked for the RCS...

Nice going...that was a pretty aweful design from the start and manufacturing hated it more than anyone.  The bolts would have a tendency to not always go in strait and the added step on the production line wasn't very desirable either.  As I was just a puke on the production line at the time, I wasn't privy to exactly what sparked the change...if it was you, WTG!

DejaVu,

I don't think so. Way back when when there was no Game but Air Warrior we always shanghaied the TM Rep to fly with us. We dubbed Don Wells "Sir Chumley" and he flew in the CAF's Buff Flight (The Filthy Fifth) and when he moved on we Branded Matt "SOB" because we all had call signs and SOB just made sense, Tho I am sure your story might be true as well. Its a natural.

Man, I know I'm not alone in missing Buzz. His "Dark Sucker" theory still makes me ROTFLOL to this day. For those not familiar, Its posted on our squads website, http://www.cactusairforce.org/  , You can't miss the link right of the title page.

<S!> to Buzz, And his Son, SOB...

I dunno...but I looked into it, and apparently some genes can skip a generation.  Maybe I picked up some of the Fat Drunk Bastard genes of my forefathers.  Environment could also have something to do with it.  As I spend more time hanging out with idiots and shiftless layabouts (such as yourself and Skernsk <two peas in a pod> ), I tend to pick up traits common to them and incorporate them into my own personality.

I guess I'm just doomed to be a dweeb!
