Water and the American West
« on: February 15, 2001, 04:19:00 PM »
If you are interested in the history and future of the western United States I have a good book for you called Cadillac Desert. Very good book. The version I read was printed in the mid 80's. There my be an updated version out. Even so the information is still valid. Very good reading for those that deal with water and water rights or are just interested in history. I read the letter that can be said to have put the government promoted settlement of the west to an end. You will never guess when that was I bet so I will tell you. It was 1995. The Bureau of Reclamation stated that it would no longer build new facilities and would only manage the existing facilities. The Reclamation (irrigation) of the arid lands of the west was the last big effort by the US Gov. to move people to the West. So in a way you can think of yourself as a pioneer if you moved to the West before 1995. Weird huh.

It has been my observation, over the years, that trivia buffs, in general, just have a more highly developed sense of "wanting/needing to know" than the average bear  Always digging into/reading stuff "just to know" whether or not it is a primary area of interest to them.
