The YB-40 Gunship "Tampa Tornado" of the 303rd Bombardment Group, 359 Bombardment Squadron. And yes, it DID fly, and there were at least two built, 41-24341 (Known as XB-40) and 42-5736 (known as a YB-40). I know guys who already fly B17s as gunships, but that thing would ROCK!!! I know it doesnt look like it has too many more guns than the normal one, but that 3rd turret would be kick ass!!! Also note both waste guns are doubles.

This would be an interesting perk bomber but honestly...I could sit down and think of at least a dozen bombers that were more relevant to the AH era than the YB-40.

Good choice for eventual consideration imo!

Its not a bomber. As far as I know, it has absolutely no bomb capacity. It was designed to replace the need for fighter escorts, so if we got it, it would be like the A-20: There would be no formation option.

these aircraft flew with the main formation but were slower and heavier then the noemal bombers.when the formation unloaded and went light the yb40 couldnt keep up with them.

the idea was not a suscess and was soon withdrawn

well... yeah. But with how screwey AH modelling tends to be... naw, j/k, But i can garuntee it would be very popular. And in AH, bombers would gladly slow down, just for that extra cover. It would also add an interesting aspect to ETO scenarios, when we get big bomber formations. I can tell you monkeyme will definately fly one for the 303rd. Thats what he uses the B17 for anyway. this just gives him a bigger gun!

Furthermore, if having 3 bombers(with how many guns firing in tandom?) isn't enough for you, then you are hopeless. I could see this being considered if you only got 1 bomber.

Im not saying its super effective, but neither is the Ar-234. Its just plain FUN!!! When you go into Fighter Town, or to provide cover in Tank Town, you often end up with only one bomber left anyway after hard maneuvers. So why not just start with a dedicated gunship?If you angle it right, you can get 11, possibly 13 .50 callibre guns trianed on an enemy, as opposed to 6 or 8.

i'm not very familiar with the yb-40, so is it me or does that thing look suspiciously like a b17?

just with an extra turret up top and the left and right guns were transformed from a single .50 cal to a double .50 cal

other than that i'm seeing no differeance at all other wut u said about it not abale to carry any bombs at all, and that it was slower when the bombers it escorted lightened up, also if this was the problem could they have given it more powerful engines? or was engine technology too limited at the time? but i suppose if they could give this vb40 more powerful engines then u could reason that they could just as well give the regular bombers faster engines thus resulting in sum sort of paradox where the yb40 would nvr be fast enough to keep with reg. bombers after they lightened up.

It WAS a B17. But it came out of the factory like that. And it has quite a few more guns, and more ammo. I doint think it carries bombs, because i have only heard it mentioned as an escort, and not a participating member of the attack.
