Author Topic: I am moving from the CRT world to the LCD world, advice? (Read 458 times)

I am looking at buying a couple ViewSonic LCD screens to replace my Sony G500 21" CRT.

I am looking at the 21.3" VP2130b:

This would be for my PC, which is my main system. I use it for games and personal business mostly. This LCD has a 1600x1200 native resolution, which is what I prefer and an 8ms refresh time, so it should be decent for games. I think I would need to replace the stand on this monitor though as I have heard bad things about that part of it.

I am also looking at getting a 19" 16:10 aspect ratio VA1912wb:

This one would be for my Mac, and would be used for secondary purposes and movies.

These two LCDs are pretty much at the top of the budget I can swing, considering that I'll likely need to get a stand for the 21.3" LCD.

The other thing I am thinking is that I should have screen protectors made for them. There is a plastics company near where I work that does custom jobs like that.

Do any of you have any advice about any of this? Are these good monitors for the price? Do I need the screen protectors?

I tried the samsung 930b which spec'd at 8ms but I found the ghosting/blurring in AH made it much harder to shoot/fight
went back to the old 19" CRT sony

I Love my Viewsonic VX922. But it's a 19" and you want a 21" for your standard PC. The 2ms response time may be marketing hype, but I can verify I've never had ghosting or blurring.

I had a 21" CRT, so the 19" LCD is the same screen size. I don't think I need a bigger one.

You can get the 922 for $285 (incld shipping) at Newegg. Where you live you can get it at Frye's. Some stuff at Frye's is cheaper than Newegg, some more expensive. But it is nice to be able to take stuff back for instant credit/replacement if it dosen't work.

Unless you have rambunctious kids who like to poke things with their fingers, you don't need a plastic cover. If you want a little extra protection from dust and the occasional smudge, just tape a piece of overhead projector plastic film over the screen.

My 21" CRT has a 20" viewable, so a 19" LCD would be smaller. Also 19" LCD's only do 1280x1024.

I'd like the 21.3" to make things larger while staying at 1600x1200.

In a previous post I stated I bought a 20.1in Samsung 204B. It has a 5ms response time and I have seen no blurring nor ghosting. It also supports a 1600 x 1200 resolution. It however does not have usb ports nor speakers etc.

In all, extremely happy with the monitor, really good design and nice to work with

Got samsung 930b and the same trouble as eagler.

While it is listed with 4ms response time it still has shadowing under some circumstances. Specially red icon in front of blue sky gives a green trail.

Also when you look at tests it is easy to see... this samsung puts up verry good response time in the specific point of the ISO measurement, but the time gets extremly bad on other transitions. So a display with listed 10ms might be better than listed 4ms, only extensive tests can tell. So if others are happy with your display then thats already a good sign.

what are you guys talking about our little 16" (its mostly family but i use it that most and tweak it as well (and get blamed or it constantly typing in caps lock cus ur too un litterate to turn caps lock off and when you download a virus for yourself and i get blamed..

)

but i mean 4ms response time should be enough but i cant remeber if it ghosted any or not but it was fun using a 21 compared to 16 inch and at a higher resolution

They are talking about high contrast ghost issues instead of the grey to grey refresh time.

Higher-end Viewsonic CRT and LCD monitors are OEM products made by Sony and Panasonic. Viewsonic doesn't manufacture them. The case and internal PCB design are per Viewsonic specs.

The OEMs use less expensive PCB parts (resistors, capacitors, etc., that can contribute to statistically reduced product life) and a different conversion/display circuit design.

It really comes down to what looks good to your eye side-by-side. If I found a similar spec/price display by either Panasonic or Sony, I might opt for it since they are more conscious of their brand quality, but it wouldn't be a deal killer for me.

I recently bought this one from Newegg & I really like it. It is my first LCD because all the ones I had checked out in person sucked to be honest. This one is cheap, no dead or stuck pixels & the 2ms response gives a good CRT like image quality, ghosting isn't a problem.
