At about 3 AM this morning a STG2 (2nd class petty officer). Shot himself in the head with an M-14 while he was on watch.

This is kinda a hard thing to deal with. The crew is pretty tight knit. Many of us in the duty section had talked to him that night. He had talked about some problems he had, and he was down about a DUI he had got recently, but otherwise showed no noticable signs of being suicidal.

Being te duty OS I had to write the Unit Sitreps for this. Which of course meant I was the first enlisted guy to get all the details(though most of the duty section knew he had shot himself since the gunshot prompted us into a security alert).

This just sux.

That's sad, although he didn't show any signs of suicide, you should've joined the chaplaincy and taken my dad's course on "Suicide Intervention".

he was found sitting on the deck..the butt of the rifle between his feet and the muzzle resting on his shoulder (obviously moved to the side when it went off and his grip on it relaxed.)

Very sorry to hear Astac, suicide has always been a hard thing for me to deal with personally. My condolences to you and your crewmates.

Death by itself is hard to deal with for most people. Many times when a freind/loved one commits suicide it is much harder to deal with. One of my brothers hung himself about 15 years ago. I think the fact that he commited suicide was far harder to deal with than if he had been killed in a car accident for instance.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

not all problems are temporary, infact many problems are permanent.

suicide is more the easiest and most sellfish way out of most problems, be they permanent or temporary.

Terminal illness is the only problem I can think of as permanent and even that is sometimes iffy. I agree with ya on the selfish part.

Selfish? You say selfish like it's a bad thing. There is nothing wrong with being selfish.

It's very hard to understand that. You are programmed all your life to believe that you aren't important, and that being selfish is a bad thing.

this isnt really the place, more respect should maybe be shown to the threads topic.....i know what you're saying about being yourself more and wanting to get things in order for number 1 not being the worst thing in the world, but are you sure you've thought about how selfish suicide is, unless there really isnt any creature on the planet that depends on you and/or will be traumatised by the events of your 'unusual' death, then maybe you got no one else to affect and fair play, pull the trigger.

an unatural death effects all animals on earth that have any degree of intelligence. humans are very good at pretending that we can 'take it' but put a human through something unatural such as suicide and every single one will be affected in some way by what they experience.

attempted suicide is, if i am not mistaken, a crime in some parts of our world. so if you jump infront of a train and lose both you legs you could end up in prison, with no legs. that would suck.

with all due respect lasersailor, more importantly ASTAC, that is all i have to say.
