Tar removal from hands

Spent the day patching and taring the driveway. Got a good deal on my hands. Ive tried it all...
-Soap
-gasoline
-Lava Soap

Its still there...any suggestions?


EDIT: Before some tardy-dar says wear gloves I would like to point out I was wearing gloves.

well u can do it the redneck way....well 2 ways actually...1 is to get someone to peel off a little bit to get a grip on it then pull...or get a knife and have fun

Laquer Thinner or MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone)

Down side is both are hard core carcinogens.  

Either way, Laquer Thinner is the lesser of the evils (MEK is freaking bad news) and is so great it even removes the Purple PVC Primer I have been using all day to put up the new airlines in the new shop!

If you cant find anything to get rid of the tar, amputation would work. :p

Just kidding. :D Might try an enzyme cleaner. I cleaned carpets for about a year one time. An enzyme cleaner took tar out of a carpet when nothing else I had available would.

Im gona let my hands heal a day or two from the lava soap before I try another chemical.

Well normally I would say Gojo
But you probably already let it get hard at this point and it will now probably be hard to remove even with GOJO.

Sooo your choices are

Goof off
Goo gone
Paint thinnners/Turpentine
Laquer thinner.
Gasoline.
Nne of which are particularly good for you (But it will remove the tar) so follow up with a good wash with soap and plenty of waterafterwords
Particularly if you go the gasoline route
That is, unless you enjoy peeling skin.

Or you can scrub off as much as you can, or till your skin turns so raw you just give up.
then simply wear it off.

Some oil based Stains and paints stain my hands so bad that no matter what I do  I end up having to wear the restof the stain off.

Usually completly gone in a couple days

The gasoline in combination with lava soap got rid of most of it. It still remains in places I can scrub very well without causing bleeding. I was gona use paint thinner until I realized the kind that comes in the little jars for painting models was the only kind I had.

Dont use Lava soap. Coulda prediced the outcome.

Get yourself a small can of GoJo and keep it in the garage.
Works great on that kinda stuff provided you dont let it (the tar) set




GoJo comes in a jell like form
when you use it. Dont wet your hands first. Nor wash it off with water.
Take a glob out and run it over your hands working it in.
Use a small soft scrub brush to scrub the difficult areas.
Wipe off with an old towel or paper towels.

If your hands are clean. then wash with regular soap and water afterwards.

If not. Repeat

GoJo also has Lanolin in it which makes your hands soft and more wife friendly

Just use baby oil or mineral oil, much better for your hands and non explosive, if those don't do a good enough job then an orange based  cleaner would be the best next step.

I have surfed for 45 years, dealt with So.Cal tar alot.

In roofing we use "Orange cleaner". It's a liquid that comes in a 1 gal blue can, or in a spray bottle.

Get it from your local roofing supply company, probably from home depot too.

Ugh..home depot. They took the fun out of going to a hardware store and being a guy thing. Now its a female driving a SUV kinda thing.
