There's more to searching the paper for jobs.  Gotta beat the streets, talk to people.  Call up old work buddies.  Network, baby!  :)

He'll have a better job quicker that way.

Well I'm be starting something within the next couple weeks.. got a few interviews set up for next week.  I'm catching kind of a lucky break.. the wife got hired on as "permanent" instead of working there through a temp agency... so she'll start getting full benefits.. plus about 30% raise.

I'm pretty confident about a job with Pitney Bowes as a.. well office gopher kind of person.  Basic printer/copier repairs (jams, etc).. "mailroom" kind of stuff... probably be making some coffee.. stuff like that.  Not a high paying job, but a foot into the door of some kind of office experience.

I'm getting a lot of support from family.  They've been wanting to see me get out of auto repairs for awhile now.  No they don't have any spare money to give me (not that I would ask anyway), but they are contacting everyone they know to try to help with a job.

My problem with old work buddies and all is that all I've ever done (officially)is automotive work.  Although I know enough about computers to rival some IT guys, I simply do not have the experience.. or the degree.  Auto techs make enough money to the point to where they typically aren't driven to go onto other things and the few that do tend to leave their past lives behind.  There's a reason they typically work on cars.. because they don't want to work with the general public.

I could have probably started work a couple weeks ago somewhere else working on cars, the problem is it's like... quicksand.  Employers aren't exactly "thrilled" about their workers seeking other careers, and will pretty much do anything within their power (legal or not) to prevent that from happening.  The work is often fast paced and exhausting and when I would get off work the last thing I had energy for was to go looking for another line of work.

My aces high subscription is paid up through september.  I had changed my name and as a result they double billed me last month.  I contacted HT and they credited me an extra month, which was fine for me.  Plus $15 isn't going to make or break me the way I see it, just kind of sucks to not be able to play.

Yes we'll pay the bills this month, it's next month that's going to be a bear... but as soon as we get it covered I'll fix my computer and be back "in the air" so to speak.  I'm just happy that I don't have any kids because if I did I would have had another job, no matter how much I despised the work I was doing, the very next day for their sake.

I'm in a good position.  My landlord is an old geezer (super nice guy)... puts all the money we pay in rent for this house into a trust fund for his family.  He's very understanding and even refused to charge us the $25 late fee our second month here (we had some unexpected expenses and paid rent a week late as a result).  He's already told us that he really likes us as tenants and if we have to delay rent a little he's not going to make a big fuss out of it.

This house is the best place I've ever lived.  It's not exactly "eye candy" but it is very solid and functional.  Furnishings are old.. the hardwood doesn't shine.. and there are scatches in the windowframes.. just from normal wear and tear from the 80 years this house had been here.  But the roof doesn't leak a drop, the floorboards have no mold, mildew, etc at all.  I'd buy this house in a heartbeat given the chance.  I'd rather live here and be able to put pictures up and paint if i want.. then somewhere else where they need written permission in order to put up a poster!

Anyways, I'll keep you guys posted I have a feeling it won't be long!  Thank you for your help and advice!  Some of you guys truly treat me better than close friends of mine!

Hell, I have a friend who is finishing up his degree at ASU and is working as an auto mechanic right now.  He tells me the same thing as you--working as an auto mechanic for someone else is a biotch.  He plans to open his own shop after graduation & after getting further experience in repairing BMW's.

He said the auto repair shop owner is making mega bucks.

If your experience is in repair--of either automobiles or computers--I'd suggest you consider getting a formal education in either small business management or the IT/IS field.

yeah the owner of the shop I was at drove a $90k BMW, his wife had an $80k Hummer, lived in a $1.5million house and bragged about paying $47,000 for a dining room set he had to ship in from England.

Then he would come out in the heat of the shop and eat lunch with us.. which was fine and dandy and all but then he'd rub it in about how he wasn't any better than us because he ate lunch in the heat with us!

Then he would spend 45 minutes talking about how he isn't egotistical at all.

But yet... 105 degrees out... working on 250 degree cars, 1000 degree exhausts he never supplied any soft drinks or juice or water or anything.  He "bought" us lunch about once or twice a month using money paid to him from old scrap metal parts from the junk guy... and then he would brag about how he buys us lunch all the time.  I told him to use that money for drinks but he'd rather blow the money on one day of applebee's for everyone, rather than a months worth of gatorade or bottled water.  Needless to say none of us were very appreciative, as usually it was just too darn hot to enjoy your meal.. especially when he wouldn't let us eat in the air conditioning.

But he's no better than us!  I told him during our fight he'd earn more respect by staying in his office all day or better yet... not coming in at all!  Things were always more complicated when he actually tried to run things.

Well I've got an interview today for a car salesman position at a dodge dealership... we'll see how that goes!  Wish me luck!

Good luck man

I've worked for people like that before.  They never realize the damage they do by stroking their own egos.

My Father In Law is a Ford Master Tech and I hear about this kind of stuff all of the time.

Hey I passed all the Ford tests for that... all I needed was the classroom experience... in lieu of sending me to ford school, they laid me off
haha (low man on the totem pole... 3 days away from earning vacation pay, tool allowance, and test bonuses... over $2500.. guess they decided to be cheap.. union "can't do anything to help") and this was the job BEFORE mr. EGO

YES I got the job!  All I have to do is pee in a cup
Haha.. nah that won't be a problem.

If I sell 20 cars a month.. i'll almost double my previous salary
A car a day... well... I'll be building that dream ACES HIGH machine! And maybe even my own mustang... what?  it's a dodge dealer.. good thing I'm talking about the P51! :aok

LONG LONG Hours though.. but I'm at the point to where I'm so sick or being behind on bills and getting sued and all that.. I don't care.  I just want to make as much money as I possibly can.  I'll work my life away for a couple years if I have to, I just don't want to work on them anymore.  Once I get out of debt, buy my own home, and have some savings and retirement in place.. then I can go looking for something even better... who knows though I may love this job.

Anyways.. things are starting to look up.  Still not in a position to fix my computer, but.. well I'm sure someone will cough up a used motherboard somewhere.

Thanks for the support guys, I really needed it.  This has been hard on me, especially mentally.  I really felt like I was going crazy and even the wife was starting to get really worried (about me).  She has been putting applications in for a second job and I really didn't feel comfortable making her work all those hours while I sat on my butt and sulked.  Hopefully that won't be necessary now.

Her best advice to me... NO ACES HIGH AT THE OFFICE! darnnit! haha
