Looking for some picture achive software
« on: August 25, 2006, 12:22:16 PM »
I need some help/advice on software.

Im looking for a program to manage/archive a huge amount of Photos. What im looking for is the ability to "tag" the pictures with certain key words and later, do a search for topics/keywords and/or time stamps with the program filtering the respective pictures.

I did a search on Google and came across about a ton (in electron weight) of software that in one way or other does that. Most of those programs are mainly for private use and key features are viewing/editing of photos, not the catalogisation (vocabulary?). I do not need editing, as i use Photoshop for that, just the archive part.

Anyone have any ideas on non-expensive programs?

Good luck, Schatzi... "non-expensive" is the hard part. I can personally recommend Extensis Portfolio from my day-job experience, but that will cost you... although I have no idea if you can find used or outdated copies out there for less. As software goes, it will do everything you need.

I've heard good things about Adobe PhotoShop Album... relatively cheap (~ $50 US) and some comparisons to Google Picasa (~ free US).

I'd be interested with what you come up with, as we're always looking for something like this that isn't too expensive, and that you don't get charged extra for each additional client you add.

Good luck .

Eeek, scratch free or non-expensive. Im looking at 5000 to 10000 photo files there, number steadily increasing - that need to be calssed into subcategories and tagged with key words. Any ideas for professional software?

Dux:

Free/cheap software i liked best was Adobe Photoshop Album. Its not going to fly for the amount of pics Im looking at though. It also has two issues that make its less useful for my needs: First, when searching for key words, you cant do so with boolean AND function, you always get OR. The second prob is that if you move/rename a folder or file, youll have to reassociate it in the archive *manually*.

Also, if you dont mind id like to ask you a little more about Extensis Portfolio. Could you shoot me an email to Schatzi@slowcats.de please?

Since you're now considering pro level software, Iview is probably  the best one out.  If you're looking for a software/hardware combo, Stakka is the best option.

Just curious, did you just try the Adobe Photo Album, or were you using Elements?  Elements 3.0 (4.0 now) incorporates Photo Album as part of it's suite, but is more powerful.  I think they give a free trial download.

Ok, what i need is finding the needle in a haystack. Get me a photo of a cow with a vet and kid in front, taken in Sudan in 2004...... out of 10.000 currently mainly unsorted pics.

So far im looking at Extensis Portfolio 7 or Cumulus (i think that one is a little overkill and too complicated for the users that need to run it).

SOA: I downloaded a freeware version of APSA (starter edition) that was missing a few features like CD-burning that are of no interest to me anyway.

Im using Picasa in laptop (1169 images + films ) and second puter in home where is more than 10 000 pics and films. Works fine.

It does everything you say you need.

But if you dont like it, I found this. Thumbs up
